Company board Director and part owner as result of a MBO and subsequently the company sale. Experienced in managing full product design & operational teams to individual customer and or world wide market needs notably in the Satellite Direct to home market sector.

Established complete sub-contract high volume manufacturing operations both in the UK and in China for Satellite reception products with a real hands on and lead approach. This also involved the selection and commercial management of all sub contract vendors whether they be semiconductor suppliers, circuit boards, injection moulded parts or die castings by way of example.

Responsible for the company product bid process and subsequent cost track programme that I devised including the companies New Product Introduction (NPI) strategy.

Secured a £600K DTI contract for the development of a 30GHz 2 Watt Microwave power amplifier for use in Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) for 2 way Satellite communication.

As a consultant resolved a large number of equipment compatibility issues for a major Satellite TV operator.

As a consultant devised a market business plan to define the the Microwave technology, resource, capital equipment and the associated funds to enter VSAT markets for a UK company.

Involved in the design and development of Opto Electronic products for both military and commercial markets.

• Solved a technical issue with an LED lighting system that was being installed in U.S. military vehicles as part of a potential multi million dollar contract.
• Improved the performance of an Optical tape measure/Blue tooth device that was being developed for the clothing industry, this involved sourcing key technical components.
• Outsourced the manufacture and supply chain of the tape measure to a UK company.

Worked on a patented technique, which was taken to the market as a licensed solution, which allowed design, manufacture and sales of a product that generates white noise that can be used as a directional sound evacuation system for all enclosed spaces.

• Established a company and negotiated for a licence to allow product design, product manufacture and subsequent sale of Sound Alert fire evacuation systems.

Raven Manufacturing 2004

Key achievements
• Provided product procurement guidance in technical, commercial and experimental assessment areas for Low Noise Blocks that were to be supplied to BSkyB.
• Secured a supply contract with BSkyB for Raven.


BSkyB 2003
Reporting to the Engineering Manager with responsibility for resolving equipment compatibility issues and customer complaints that were occurring in the field.

• Resolved a large number of equipment compatibility issues for the company
• Conducted a detailed product assessment covering indoor and outdoor equipment performance on a stand alone and integrated basis.
• Produced a full product technical test configuration matrix and programme for existing and new product validation.

Raven Manufacturing 2002 - 2003
Reporting to the Board of Directors leading a study focused on new Satellite business opportunities for the company, notably in the area of 2-Way Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT).

• Defined and detailed Microwave products and the associated RF technologies necessary for these markets.
• Prepared a structured feasibility plan including the required human resource and capital expenditure that would be needed to enter this market sector.

Key achievements

• Set up the new companies Engineering and Operational base in Ayr Scotland.
• Configured the company's Engineering, Operations and Quality Systems.
• Devised a New Product Introduction (NPI) strategy.
• Constructed the companies Bill of Materials (BOM's) and individual component data base formats.
• Negotiated all material pricing with major suppliers notably Fujitsu, NEC and Mitsubishi.
• Sourced sub-contract manufacturers, drew up and agreed product supply contracts and pricing.
• Introduced quarterly sub-contract pricing revues allowing a material price down profit share scheme.
• Formulated a product cost track format that was used across the company and involved Sales and Marketing, Engineering, Operations and Quality. This document basically allowed the key personnel within the company to see exactly a particular products material price, its cost to manufacture its final delivered price and the average sales price. The cost track document then forecast cost down by way of Engineering design changes, alternative suppliers that could be brought on line and negotiating and or devising a lower product manufactured cost.
• Led a project team that secured a £600K DTI contract for the British National Space Centre.
• Continued LNB development for world markets.
• Managed the outsourcing of product manufacture to China.
• Managed a project team that secured a development contract to supply 12GHz/30GHz (Ku/Ka) band RX/TX systems for Raytheon.
• Planned and managed the total move of the Engineering and Operation activities including equipment from Ayr to Theale in Berkshire with minimal impact to the business.

A variety of engineering, R&D and technical development roles with Cambridge Computers and Marconi Space and Defence Systems delivering hi tech solutions using microwave technologies, notably Gallium Arsenide Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit wafer processing and subsequent chip manufacture at the GEC Hirst research centre - London.
