Career History

2004 - Present

Mechanical Production Manager - Nuclear Engineering and Welding Section HM Naval Base Clyde.

  • As Mechanical Production Manager for the Nuclear repair section has been directly responsible for an increase in welding success rate from 50% to over 90% on a monthly basis.
  • Project manages multiple, intrusive, high risk repairs, alterations and planned maintenance work to naval nuclear power plants, high energy gas and hydraulic systems and to submarine structures. This includes system testing and commissioning upon task completion.
  • Has direct line management responsibility for a team of 70 skilled tradesmen including 10 specialist Nuclear supervisors.
  • Conducts technical authorship and 3 rd party reviews Standard Operating Procedures and system technical instructions including system release and testing procedures.
  • Produces and authorises safe systems of work for use on Naval Marine Nuclear Power Plants, high energy gas, and hydraulic systems.
  • Produces clear and unambiguous technical instructions to allow teams of skilled and semi skilled workers to work within legal and organisational requirements.
  • Is a Full member of the Nuclear Procedure Authorisation Group.
  • Provides detailed project plans to the planning organisation within the naval base and oversees contracted work on the nuclear steam raising plant.
  • Interprets NDE radiographs to identify nature of defects in welded joints.
  • Liaises with external organisations for the procurement of specialist tools and materials.
  • Conducts research and development of machining and repair techniques for use in bespoke repairs where current systems prove ineffective.
  • Produces comprehensive contract bids to source new work for the Nuclear Welding workshop.
  • Allocates and briefs section manpower to individual teams and tasks.
  • Produces technical drawings using AutoCAD 2006 for use by external authorities and manufacturers.
  • Liaises with External Design Authorities to ensure repair planning compliance with system design specifications.

1998 - 2004

Submarine Maintenance Planner and Nuclear Plant Supervisor.

Operated as a nuclear plant supervisor (Cat A Watchkeeper), onboard two of the UK's nuclear deterrent submarines. Responsibilities included being team leader for the safe operation of the nuclear plant at all times whether critical or shutdown and in normal and emergency situations.

Additionally:-

ˇ Acted as the submarines whole boat project manager for maintenance and defect rectification periods. It was during this extremely busy period that commendations were received from the submarine authority senior management teams for project management and quality of reporting which enabled the submarine to meet its very tight schedules.

ˇ Provided a central focus point for repair authorities to programme key events during an extremely busy and complex operating period.

ˇ Acted as the Submarine Quality Assurance officer to compile the stringent quality assurance records and reports required of a Nuclear submarine during a maintenance period.

ˇ Compiled the end of maintenance period reports and licences on behalf of the Submarine Command Team which ultimately resulted in clearance for the submarine to proceed to sea being granted.

ˇ Had direct line management responsibility for team of 60 engineers and technicians.

ˇ Produced daily maintenance reports and chaired daily briefing meetings with submarine repair authorities to provide real time rescheduling of conflicting key events.

ˇ Compiled 'departure from submarine design intent' certificates to provide assurance to the Design Authority that non standard practises or repairs were sufficiently documented and authorised to allow 'work out' at a future date.

ˇ Acted as the health and safety advisor for the engineering department producing COSHH and risk assessment reports to ensure a rigorous safety culture across the department.

ˇ Acted as team leader for problem solving during technical breakdowns.

ˇ Trained, examined and authorised personnel for nuclear watchkeeping duties.

ˇ Acted as the control officer for all engineering system defects on board the submarine; conducting assessment and classification of defects and allocating teams to conduct prioritised rectification.

1994 - 1998

Nuclear Standards Inspector.

  • Acted as key member of the nuclear facility Quality Assurance team conducting quality 'hold point' inspections to ensure 3 rd party compliance with the rules and regulations of UK Nuclear Site Authorisation.
  • Audited Clyde Submarine Base safety case procedures during the Nuclear site authorisation period in preparation for external audit by licensing body.
  • Audited submarine repair authority working teams and procedures against both their own stated and standard quality requirements.
