Freelance Project Manager

Office Manager for Consultant or Project Manager for Construction Project.
I have gained my professional experience from a wide range of projects carried out since starting my working career in 1982 as an apprentice draftsman. I consider myself an all-round civil/ structural engineer and project manager having practical experience in : design of structures using Steel, Concrete and Masonry; building refurbishment; infrastructure for Industrial Developments; and appraisal of existing structures.
I am presently resident in Muscat, Oman, as Head of Engineering for COWI & Partners LLC, Consulting Engineers. My current responsibilities include, management of engineering staff, project management on particular key projects, allocation of resources and recruitment, tendering and financial control for projects. In the past few years I have acted as Deputy General Manager while the current Manager was temporarily stationed in Bahrain.
Prior to this posting I served as Senior Engineer and later Regional Manager for COWI in Saudi Arabia where I gained extensive experience in concrete rehabilitation both investigation and implementation.
Before going to the Middle East in 1997, I was the Principal Engineer for White Young Green Consulting Engineers, Manchester, and was responsible for design and production of contract documents and Project Management on various "New build" and Rehabilitation projects. These included a new 7,000 m 2 High Bay Distribution Warehouse; Infrastructure design and site supervision for a laboratory facility for a leading pharmaceutical company; Project Management of refurbishment works at Manchester University and structural design on several commercial Office/Retail buildings.

Head of Engineering for Muscat Office where I have responsibility for management of staff, allocation of resources and recruitment, supervise project management by others and ensure financial control procedures are implemented.

Project Manager for House of Musical Arts 'Concert Theatre' for the Royal Court Affairs. This is a design and supervision contract with a value of approx. 100M sterling, where COWI are responsible for Civil/Structural design; Building Services Design; masterplanning of Transport routes and Fire and Life Safety. The project involves co-ordination with numerous specialist consultants, incl. Theatre Specialist and Acoustic Specialist, and is lead by the project Architect based in London. We have now reached tender stage and expect to be on site with the project from March 2007 with a 36 month construction programme.

Project Manager for Supervision of new Office building for Internal Security Services with a value of approx. 3M sterling. This building was designed internally by COWI and is situated on a rocky slope on the perimeter of the main Administration complex. The works required extending columns below the slabs into the Wadi and using micro-piles to form stable foundations.

A number of structural investigations and concrete rehabilitation projects for private clients, including Office Buildings and private villas.

Project Manager for Rehabilitation of Highway Bridges and replacement of bearings. As part of the Municipality ongoing maintenance programme COWI were appointed to investigate 6 bridge structures, design repairs and undertake contract supervision. Replacement of bearings took place during normal operation of the roads by nominal jacking-up of bridge decks.

Project Manager for QAA Guest House, a new facility adjacent to the Royal Palace in Muscat to accommodate and entertain visiting dignatories. Architectural design was carried out by the clients in-house architect and COWI were responsible for Civil/Structural design, incl. containment of surface water from surrounding Jebels. Project value was approx. 120M sterling and involved extensive site clearing, jebel cutting and bolting, basement excavations with de-watering and some challenging long span concrete and steel structures.

Alrabiah COWI, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Technical Manager, KSA based in Dammam. Responsible for investigation and rehabilitation design for deteriorated concrete structures at King Abdul Aziz Naval Base in Jubail. Investigation of earthquake damaged structures at Haql, Saudi Arabia , on behalf of insurers. Co-ordination of site supervision teams for refurbishment contracts at desalination plants in Jeddah and Asir. In charge of day to day activities in the Dammam office, assess project resource requirements, budgeting and reporting directly to MD.

Regional Manager, Jeddah, responsible for establishing a new office, creating a client base, marketing to potential clients throughout the region, preparation of fee proposals and management of successful bids. Recruitment of staff and control of day to day office activities.

Project Management of new office and showroom for Grundfos Pumps in Riyadh. Development of scheme design; applications for authority approvals; co-ordination of Architect and Engineers for the detail design; tender and supervision of site activities.

Appraisal of overhead gantry cranes for Saudi Iron and Steel Co. (HADEED) for compliance with German DIN Standards followed by design of strengthening works and preparation of tender package.

Site Supervision for rehabilitation of Compressor Foundation during Plant Maintenance Shut Down; Saudi Methanol Co. Three week project working continuously to remove and refurbish the plants main compressor, remove deteriorated concrete and re-construct the foundation.

Management of Site Supervision Team for rehabilitation of various vessel and stack foundations during Plant Maintenance Shutdown; Saudi Petrochemical Co. Two teams working 12 hr shifts supervised the contractor operating 24 hr working over a four week project.

Part time RE for Civil Works Rehabilitation at Al-Khobar Desalination Plant. This is a SR26M project involving significant demolition and re-construction of concrete elements constructed in mid 1980's, where the contractor has between 150 and 200 staff on site.

White Young Green, Manchester

Principal Engineer for feasibility study, scheme design and civil engineering for temporary office and laboratory accommodation, infrastructure, road bridge and car park (6.5M) for Rohne-Poulenc Rorer, Pharmaceutical Co., United Kingdom.

Extension to existing High Bay Warehouse facility for Walkers Crisps. Design of structural steel frame with 10m height to haunch and 7,000m 2 floor area.

Refurbishment and rehabilitation of Laboratory Facility, University of Manchester - acting as Lead Consultant - Project Manager for 0.5M project.

Investigation of steel structures at Aluminium Foundry at Anglesey, North Wales. Here, years of dust deposits had collected on exposed steel elements and trapped moisture had caused extensive corrosion. This generally required extensive replacement of external ganties and conveyor systems.

R. T. James & Partners, Barrow-in-Furness

Appraisal of crane gantries at VSEL Shipyard, to increase lift capacity of overhead cranes in 80yr old Fabrication Shop, this required careful inspection of existing structures and detailed analysis to determine life time loading characteristics. Design of Ships Fenders adjacent to quayside and rehabilitation of Ships access towers.

Design of structure and foundations for High Bay Warehouse & Distribution centre for Colony Gift Corporation. Use of lime stabilisation to improve ground conditions. Steel frame structure with 12m height to haunch, 5,000m 2 floor area.

Senior Engineer for structural appraisal and rehabilitation of concrete frame laboratory building for Glaxo Welcome, Ulverston.

Environmental improvement to fresh water stream falling into dis-repair. Project funded by Glaxo Welcome and involved re-building abutments to footbridge, removal of large vegetation from key structures, re-construction of weir and fjord walls.

Building Design Partnership, Manchester

Civil/Structural Engineer, site experience as Assistance Resident Engineer on cental area shopping and car parking development, lpswich Suffolk. Concrete frame structure with contiguous pile retaining wall for basement, four storey main building with roof mounted plant areas. Value of structure 35M, overall scheme 60M.

Senior Engineer on Marketgate development, Lancaster, responsible for initial scheme design followed by structural design of Market Hall Building using pile foundations, insitu concrete basement and lift towers, steel frame. Responsible for co-ordination of design team, management of construction information in association with project Architects.

Assistant Engineer on Morrisons Supermarket, Greater Manchester, responsible for structural steel design using long span roof trusses to create a floor area of 5000m 2 with only three internal columns.

Structural appraisal of grade 1 listed building for Boots pharmaceuticals, Nottingham. D10 is a renowned concrete frame structure built in the 1930's and designed by Sir Owen Williams. Involved in assessment of load capacity for floor slabs, structural testing of foundations, columns and slabs.

Study and report on Car Parking requirements for Bradford University.

Network analysis of foul/storm drainage systems at B.N.F.L. Preston. Use of Wallrus computer software to perform network modelling of drainage systems. The model would then be used as the basis for assessment of future alterations/additions to the system.

Report on methods of testing and options for renovation of effluent discharge pipeline for B.N.F.L Preston.

North WestWater Authority, Manchester

Technical Engineer, involved with survey of route for water supply pipeline from the Goyt Valley Reservoir, Whalley Bridge to Manchester.
