BP ETAP Central North Sea Operations Support Group Senior Engineer

Attached to Operations Support Group in support of ETAP Everest and Lomond, dealing with general operational queries and the specification of a forced lubrication system on a pump gearbox, and the modification of a single seal system on PWRI pumps. Prepared specifications and workpacks for uprating MOL pumps on ETAP from 5 to 6 stages.

Shell Expro Onshore Plant Changes Senior Engineer

Design and maintenance engineering associated with Mossmorran and St Fergus plants.

Procurement of a diesel driven emergency air compressor package and associated pipework.

Re-design and re-certification of various BS1515 pressure vessels and their internals as well as heat exchangers to BS5500/TEMA for revised design conditions.

Design of new basket assemblies and inlet baffles for MOL sieve vessels and design of new trays in columns to withstand increased differential pressures.

Job Officer - co-ordinating a multi disciplined de-bottlenecking exercise which included the specification and purchase of three 150kW multi-stage centrifugal canned pumps including seal system, bearing design and pipework modifications.

Implemented design modifications to two off 300kW 14-stage centrifugal downhole pumps for new throughput. This included troubleshooting and re-design of a malfunctioning double mechanical seal system, associated pipework and its conversion from an API plan 53A system to an API plan 53 'modified' system.

Other design modifications included changing the pump impeller configuration to reduce thrust loads on the bearing as well as NPSH testing on hydrocarbon duty to qualify pump capability to operate at a negligible NPSH margin.

Specification and purchase of 37kW multi-stage canned centrifugal pumps.

Specification and purchase of a nitrogen generator package, rotary lobe compressors, seal system for reflux pumps, analyser, and various other small pump units, including sewage pump systems.

Piping design on various small projects including N 2 bypass line, plant air supply, deluge systems, and N 2 buffer gas pipework, pump replacements relief valves etc.

Design and fabrication of bearing assemblies for fin-fan units, including bearing housings and lubrication systems.

Design of a purpose built overhead travelling hoist for the removal of Carter Pump units. The unit was self powered, articulated, suitable for use in a Zone 0 area and had a 50 feet lift capacity.

Detailed design of hydraulic components for actuated valve control consoles, overhead, valve torque converter systems, ground flare damper system , API seal systems, locking mechanisms for oil tanker loading arms, interlock systems for relief valves; (philosophy and hardware), automatic clutch to prevent breakage's of eccentric screw pump shaft.

Site Engineering for six weeks, at St Fergus dealing with site queries during plant shutdown.





Jan 90 to Nov. 91, FOSTER WHEELER WOOD GROUP , ABERDEEN

Lead Mechanical Engineer on Total Oil Marine, Platform Conversion Project and Call-off Contract.: Design of a 28m long temporary Pig Receiver to IP6. C o2 sprinkler system design for the de-manning of MCP 01, specification of a 130 m 3/hr rotary tooth compressor together with the re-certification of an existing vessel for use as a Dry Air Receiver forming part of the compressor package. Lubrication system design for plug valves. Hydraulic Oil clarification study. Air Winch load capacity regulation study. Handling study for installation and removal of turbo expander.

Design investigations into large bore actuated valves, including detailed analysis of actuator/valve interface including bolting, keyway spindle and shear stop design. Investigation into valves material suitability and acceptability to SI 1029.

Pressure Vessel design on the BP Forties PWD Project including nozzle, head and shell calculations to BS 5500 and BS 1515. Flexibility analysis of a 4m 3 storage tank to BS 799. Nozzle calculations on cylindrical and rectangular storage tanks and re-certification of two off heat exchangers for liquid relief due to tubeside rupture.

Detailed study of suitability of heat exchanger materials for a revised process duty.

Sizing of fire-pumps for parallel operation including specification minimum flow protection. Preparation of enquiry documents for shell/tube and finned tube heat exchangers, diesel storage tanks and foam pumps on the Clyde Platform, and tank modification work. Preparation of specifications, data sheets, enquiry requisition documents for small process pumps, high velocity inlet filter system and Turbine Air Filters.

Shell Tern 'A' Gas Export Project; preparation of an enquiry requisition for low/medium speed compressor unit to API 618 and Oily Water Slops Pump.

Mobil Nevis Waste Heat Recovery Project handling study for installation of heat exchanger units in gas turbine exhaust on the Beryl 'A' platform. Specified heating medium pumps.

Project/Mechanical Engineer ; preparation of proposal and design packages, material requisitioning, expediting, final documentation/certification and invoicing. Responsibilities over draughting personnel and workshop labour force. Projects included schemes for the removal of the following equipment from offshore platforms: pedestal cranes, compressor units, anchor handling winch chains and large capacity ball valves. Design work including design and subsequent fabrication of pressurised equipment handling containers, lifting devices, crane jacking supports etc. for Occidental and Sun Oil.

Mechanical systems design on Britoil's Beatrice 'B' Project, Marathon Brae 'A' and BP/Weir Downhole Project involving preparation of data sheets, specifications, bid tabulations, enquiry and requisition packages for the following: Pressure vessels, tanks, purification system for increasing the flash point of compressor seal and lubrication oil, a nitrogen generator system and a hydrocyclone unit.

Shell and Tube heat exchanger bid evaluation including an associated access and positioning study. Witness testing on behalf of BP, performance of a portable diesel driven compressor to evaluate its capabilities and its compliance with BP requirements

Design of deluge systems to protect a methanol injection skid and production manifold skid on Marathon's Brae 'A' and Shell's Dunlin 'A' platforms respectively.

Investigation into flange and bolt design with recommendations of new bolting materials for Shell's St. Fergus Platform.

Design and specification of a ventilation system for a sealed portable welding habitat for use on an exposed location on Shell's North Cormorant platform.

Field engineer on pipe-lay barge for three months. This included design of various lifting and handling appliances including a small winch to lower welders into pipe for back-welding
