PROFILE
A senior engineering manager with significant engineering and commercial experience. Experienced in managing continuous production site engineering functions and multi-million pound projects from inception to completion within budget and time constraints for major food manufacturing companies. A key team player within the factory management team focused on achieving lowest cost production whilst ensuring best practice, quality and safety standards are met. Frequently involved in managing multi-skilled engineers, external contractors, specialists and consultants, often in a unionised environment. Computer literate and experienced in the use of latest project management techniques and planned maintenance operational systems. |

A number of assignments undertaken for blue chip manufacturers within the food industry have included:
· undertaking interim management roles, that have included Chief Engineer, Project Management for major food manufacturers within the chilled, snack, vegetarian, Soya and aseptic drinks, biscuit and oral hygiene industries ensuring effective plant efficiencies using P.M and best practise techniques strategies are achieved as required.
· managing the rationalisation and integration of four sites into a newly constructed bakery, including the replacement of under-performing equipment. The assignment required a close working relationship with the Group Production Director and the senior management team to ensure optimum process and engineering efficiencies were achieved.
· leading several multi-million pounds projects for a food manufacture in the North East to enable the company to streamline the business in readiness for flotation, including the closure of one site and the redevelopment of a site in the north of England, to achieve maximum savings.
· devising and installing an innovative snack production line that challenged the 'sole' brand leader in its field. This included full participation with product development in conjunction with the 'in house' food technologist, equipment selection, design and problem-solving for the resulting production line.
· International projects including the construction of a food manufacturing facility in South East China. This was a particularly demanding project, as it required interaction with a completely different work culture. IPM was required assemble a team of food technologists and European equipment suppliers, design factory layouts and utilities for local labour construction, managing onsite installation and commissioning of equipment upon arrival.
Dalgety Food Ingredients Limited
Project Manager May 1994 to April 1998
Responsible to the Engineering Controller as the Senior Engineer of a six-man team of varying disciplines. Project Manager of feasibility study and subsequent build programme of a £25M Greenfield site. This included liaising with consulting engineers, equipment suppliers, architects and land agents. Construction project value of £15.3M included civils, site services, process equipment and IT. Full involvement with company managers to review all operating procedures, building and equipment specifications and negotiating bid tenders. Managed commissioning programme and line optimisation to ensure that design criteria and operational requirements were achieved.
Managed various projects in Eire, France, Hungary and Italy within the Dalgety Ingredients Group, by providing engineering solutions to process problems with the implementation of corrective action as required. A major success was the identification of process inefficiencies, and the re-engineering of the manufacturing process at a French site incurring financial losses. Reduced product wastage from 25% to 1% and the resulting increase in production output.
Pepsico Foods International - Smiths Crisps Ltd since 1975 1975 - 1994
Engineering Manager - Swansea October 1992 - April 1994
Responsible to Site Manager for managing all site engineering operations, staff of 24 multi-skilled engineers for 24 hour cover and an operating budget of £2.5M which included £1M engineering spares. Reduced engineering downtime from 12% to less than 4%. This was achieved by raising the planned maintenance operation from 50% to 90% utilisation as a direct result of revising the engineering structure to include a permanent weekend PM shift. The revised shift had the benefit of providing additional engineers on a Monday morning start-up, no increase to headcount or costs. Responsible for all projects, effective monitoring of production efficiencies and the implementation of continuous improvements techniques as appropriate.
Project Manager - Head Office, Theale December 1990 - September 1992
Responsible to Vice President (Operations, Europe) for capital spend projects, as manager of a 5-man engineering function. Led engineering team in a total reappraisal and rationalisation of all manufacturing sites, resulting in the closure of two sites, and a £15M refit of three remaining sites. Managed the Swansea refit project, total cost £7M (including £2M civils), and the installation and development of production lines transferred from the two sites identified for closure. The overall project reduced operating costs by £5M/year. Initiated and devised an automatic handling system to replace a labour-intensive process for "Quavers". This resulted in a reduction of 30 people, a saving of £360K per annum and 4% increase in output. Actively engaged in engineering support to Pepsico World Field Engineers engaged in overseas installations of extruded products.
Factory Engineer - Fleetwood, Lancs January 1988 - November 1990
Responsible to the Factory Manager for all site engineering functions - sales turnover £14M, staff of 17 engineers of varying disciplines over a three-shift pattern. Managed an annual budget of £300K, which included £150K-engineering spares. Uplifted morale and engineering work practices resulting in a reduction of engineering downtime from 10% to 5%. Investigated and recommended PC based planned maintenance system, which later became the company standard. Responsible for recruitment, training and all statutory requirements.
Senior Project Engineer, Snacks - Fleetwood, Lancs June 1983 - December 1987
Responsible to Chief Engineer for all capital projects at the Fleetwood, Lincoln and Swansea sites - sales turnover £60M. Managed 1 project engineer and the secondment of 3 specialist engineers for major projects. Capital expenditure for the three sites was typically £1.5M/site per annum. Acted as both team member of multi-discipline project team in the design and implementation of changes to extrusion production and project manager of the of the engineering team in the resulting £6.3M refurbishment programme across three sites. The total of £4.3M allocated to the Fleetwood site included radical state-of-the art technology unequalled in the snack industry which resulted in high productivity, quality improvement and unit cost reduction. This enabled the company to compete effectively for private label business.
Project Engineer- Head Office Kew, Surrey April 1975 - November 1979
Responsible to Chief Engineer for capital projects across seven UK site locations as required. Managed total refurbishment project at the Fleetwood facility (value £2.5M), which transformed production to a revolutionary extrusion process for the production of Square Crisps. The refurbishment included a 6 months layoff for installation and staff training.
Managed the successful closure of three sites and resultant relocation of production to alternative sites. Part of a rationalisation programme. Managed the first Ishida computerised weighing equipment to be installed in the snack industry, which resulted in a 3% saving of finished product give-away. Acted as Company Engineering Representative overseas for the installation of equipment as part of overseas licensing agreements in Holland, India, Norway, and Singapore.
