Current Objective

At 31 I have gained a good understanding of what it takes to successfully operate a large petrochemical and refinery site. I now feel it is the ideal time to move on and develop my career further, ideally i would like to gain experience of the upstream sector.

Career Profile

Jan 2004 - present: Complex Shift Manager BP, Grangemouth, UK

I am currently responsible for overseeing overall complex performance on shift including HSE, duty incident management, external affairs, security, manufacturing and commercial performance. In addition the role encompasses coaching supervisors to the next level of performance. I make the final commercial decisions for the site [which generates £3.7million in revenue per day]. Over the course of the role my major contribution was introduction of a focused coaching programmed, implementation of safety prioritization & delegation sessions and helping to develop the daily complex meetings to focus on site wide vulnerabilities and prizes. In addition as a team we brought about a step change improvement in initial incident response preparadness on shift.

Over the last year, following the site splitting into a refining and olefins business steam I have developed my operations experience further by focusing on refinery optimisation and blending. My current drive in this role is to push back to basics and bring shift moitoring of basics such as unit yeilds and conversion figures rather than just unit throughput.

2003 -Competency Project Leader, BP, Grangemouth, UK

I was charged with responsibility for setting the direction for, and delivering the, BP Grangemouth leadership competency assurance programme. I transformed the competency process by making skill gaps analysis for 50 individual team leaders useable and constructed simple prioritized training plans. I initiated the review of key lack luster "training" events and replaced them with learning events which placed far more emphasis on structured mentoring and in-line coaching. This re-energized the customer facing team and gave me a valuable insight into leadership performance management

2002 - Petrochemicals Shift Optimisation Leader, BP, Grangemouth, UK

This role focused on delivering maximum contribution from the Petrochemicals business. In addition to performing the transactional side of the role I brought transparency to optimizing the assets. My greatest achievement in this role was the implementation of optimization road maps for each plant which focused on the big value levers and the delivery of a complimentary coaching programme. This created additional value of £1m per annum.

2001 - Asset Strategy Review Lead, BP, Grangemouth, UK

I lead the strategic review of the plant's Benzene unit. This large project demanded that I pull together the commercial and optimization team in London and the engineering team at Grangemouth with the aim of improving performance and securing the plants' operational future. This involved reviewing and screening a number of financial options including capex plans, cash flow spreading options, and fixed cost saving initiatives. I developed a sharp and focused business plan to weather a two year cash flow shortage within the business which allowed us enough spend to bounce back in a reasonable period when product margins returned.

1999 - 2001 - Lead Chemical (operations) Engineer - Ethanol/ Benzene, BP, Grangemouth, UK

This role was a huge and enjoyable challenge at an early stage of my career. I was responsible for all operational aspects of the Ethanol and Benzene plants. This included availability, optimization, management of the profit and loss accounts for these assets including preparation and tracking of cost budgets. I took a proactive approach in securing economically viable feedstock for the site from around Europe. This ensured that we were able to boost plant throughput from campaign basis to continuous basis and reduce the variable, fixed and capital cost burden per tonne of throughput. This role also encompassed managing/leading turn-arounds on the assets concerned - overseeing preparation, purchasing, construction and restarts during major turnarounds. I demonstrated an aptitude for this role and was the recognised deputy for the delivery manager - leading manufacturing issues on a day-to-day basis and participating in the European business team meetings. I also developed a user friendly import quality model which hugely improved the efficiency of our commodity trading area and is still used by traders today.

1996-1999 - Project Engineer - Benzene Unit Upgrade, BP, Grangemouth, UK

I was responsible for the delivery of the Benzene Plant Upgrade project (a $3m project) from concept through to post start-up review. This involved front end engineering reviews, and financial cost/benefits reviews. Post appraisal, I managed third party contractors in the delivery of a design that matched our operating experience at minimum cost and lead cost challenges, operability, vulnerability, HAZOP and constructability reviews. Following this, I prepared and implemented operations training sessions and finally lead the construction and commissioning of the unit. Through a great deal of tenacity and careful third party management, I was able to marry the skills and creativeness of the contractor with the best of operations experience within BP globally. This ensured that the project was delivered on specification and budget.

Interests

I enjoy hill walking, skiing, cycling, travel, and most outdoors activities. I have an active social life and enjoy catching up with friends for dinner and drinks.
