Responsibilities and Experience:

My previous position was in the Mechanical / Process Engineering section of AF-QPS Ltd. where I have worked for eight years, until the company recently went into voluntary liquidation.

AF-QPS were consultant engineers to the pulp and paper industries handling varying sizes of engineering projects all over the world. This included mechanical, pipework, structural and civil design, health and safety management and risk assessment tasks for fibre preparation systems, paper machine services, water treatment plants, chemical addition systems, steam systems and building services.

For the first two years of my career I was given training in the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering, draughting, design and computer skills. This was supplemented by a day-release college scheme to further my education.

After two years I became a qualified mechanical projects engineer and continued my part-time education at Manchester Metropolitan University where I achieved degree status.

During these part-time studies I have specialised in mechanical engineering topics, which include stress analysis, dynamics, finite element analysis, fluid systems, aerodynamics and mechanical design. In addition to this I have also studied general engineering topics such as electrical principles, quality assurance, business management and manufacturing technology.

Most of these topics were covered to some degree in my final year thesis, which was entitled 'The design and implementation of an effluent water treatment system.'

My work responsibilities involved working in a team or alone to undertake all technical aspects of a contract, from tender stage through design and to the installation.

During tendering, my responsibilities consist of:

ˇ Appraisal of the customer's requirements from the initial enquiry, through meetings and site investigations

ˇ Development of 'preliminary design specifications' for new equipment

ˇ Amalgamation of all relevant and required design standards for the project

ˇ Control of internal project budgets

ˇ Estimation of design times and installation times as part of the main project schedule

ˇ Preparation of tender documents for supplier quotations

During the design process, my responsibilities consist of:

ˇ Mechanical and pipework design using the PDMS software package

ˇ Coordination of process and civil detailed designs

ˇ Process design developing mass-flow balances and P&I diagrams

ˇ Ensuring effective communication between company departments

ˇ Review meetings both internally and with the client

ˇ Design, installation and maintenance risk assessments (FMEA)

ˇ Management of design team to control and review the design output

ˇ Tender comparisons from supplier quotations

ˇ Conformation to the ISO9000-2000 quality system

During the installation phase of a contract, my responsibilities consist of:

ˇ Implementation of Construction Design Management regulations

ˇ Compiling technical health and safety files

ˇ Supervising and planning the installation phase of the project

ˇ Acting as the principle contractor for the project

ˇ Co-ordinating activities with plant personnel

ˇ Supervising the plant commissioning and start-up processes
