Test Engineer Fuji Electronic Imaging Ltd
Technical: Commissioning and testing optical imaging equipment and associated electrical and electronic hardware used in industry. This equipment uses complex analogue and digital electronic circuitry to control a dedicated multi-laser system to image information onto photographic plate or film. The photographic media is handled using stepper motor/sensor control using circuitry typically associated with real-time control systems. Each board used has its own micro-controller backed up by PALs, FPGAs, RAMs, Flash plus various LSI dedicated controller chips with a CAN BUS systems used for communication between boards. Before information can be imaged it needs to be converted to the resolution required by specialist software and then downloaded from a computer to the machine via SCSI or a firewire interface. This information is then stored and used to control the precise positioning of the lasers for the finished task. Monitoring and setting up of the machine is carried out using hyper terminal diagnostics via an RS232 communication system.
Responsibilities: The fault finding and repair of various electronic boards down to component level using scopes, signal generators, logic analysers and computerised systems. The configuration and set up of electronic boards using various programming tools. The mechanical and laser optical set up of the machine and fault diagnosis using specialist script based software. Photographic analysis and optical adjustment. Root cause investigation and implementing processes to overcome manufacturing problems to improve quality with R&D and Suppliers. Technical support and training.
Commissioning and Service Engineer Harland Simon PLC
Technical: Commissioning and service work on shaftless and non shaftless full width colour Printing Presses. These Presses use a 65 networked multiple PLC Control system, linked to a duel controlled MMI Computer Desk used for monitoring and operator control. The PLCs communicate with each other, using an LAN system with remote monitoring and data transfer via RS422/232 communication. Shaftless presses used a full duplex fibra optic SERCOS communication system to control a large number of synchronised Indramat Drives and Motors.
Responsibilities: Electrical, mechanical and electronic fault finding. PLC commissioning, programming and testing. Electrical modification and AC industrial drive configuration. PC set up and the use of remote monitoring software to quickly locate problems within the system. Report writing, documentation and control and attending progress meeting to formulate action plans to overcome any concerns of the customer. Liaison with R&D plus customer training and supervision.
Head of the Electrical/Electronic Department Bentley Engineering Ltd
Technical: Commissioning, service work and design experience on a commercial range of computerised high speed hosiery machinery rotated by AC and DC drive technology. These machines used industrial 286/386 computer boards via purpose built interface cards to control and select a pneumatic system of valves and solenoids to control a complex mechanical process required to knit digitised patterns onto wool and fabrics. These patterns were designed on a pattern preparation system and then downloaded to the machine.
Responsibilities: The design and development of application specific interface cards for interfacing industrial computer systems and PC104 micro-controller boards to AC and DC drives, pneumatic valves, solenoids and relays, proximity switches, push buttons inputs, stop motion and warning light systems. Writing SW for testing the above, using Intel assembler. Technical problem solving and debugging of HW/SW projects. Technical investigation and trouble shooting. The repair of Digital and Analogue electronic circuitry plus the electrical repair, panel wiring and installation of machines in the UK and abroad.
System Design: Specifying electrical and electronic hardware required for a new project. This work includes application work on Eurotherm, Lenze and IMO industrial drives plus associated switchgear. Selecting Power supplies, switch mode and linear, UPSs, displays and various industrial sensors. Specifying wire, connections, crimps and the design of all these components into a workable system taking into account the cabinet layout and the reduction of noise interference by employing filtering, grounding and wire separation techniques.
Additional responsibilities: These include the management and supervision of the electrical/electronics department in a production, service and development role. Extensive liaison with customers, suppliers and contractors. The recruitment of electrical and electronic personnel. Technical telephone support for customers in the UK and abroad and the estimation of costs.
Documenting projects for production and assembly, compiling Bills of Materials and writing test procedures. This also included some work on Technical safety files and EMC compliance.
