Control and Electrical Engineer
Leading the professional engineering function for control and electrical in Avecia UK with particular responsibilities for Grangemouth sites. Principal Accountabilities:
To lead the Control & Electrical function in Avecia, to ensure that legal compliance is appropriately interpreted, requirements are set, implementation carried through and achievement monitored in a cost effective manner. To establish and manage arrangements for the delegation of Responsible C/E Licence to operate matters across the UK sites and within the Grangemouth site to ensure local areas have the proper engineering appointees to deliver SHE compliance. To ensure the appropriate C/E skill resource is identified for the ongoing business needs, to support the line management in the associated
training/development in delivering that resource and underwriting the competence. To establish effective C/E networking between sites and within Grangemouth to promote effective and value adding design, construction and maintenance activities. To lead the commercial and technical management of the main C/E contractor for Grangemouth Site to deliver the required performance on service to meet the project and plant needs. I am accountable for ensuring the company complies with the legal and company obligations in the control and electrical area. This covers a wide diversity of technical expertise e.g. high voltage supply, plant protective safety instrumented systems and process control automation systems. I am required to take decisions on the appropriate interpretation of some very complex legislation and HSE expected standards e.g. EU ATEX Directive, IEC Standard on Safety Instrumented Systems, this required working with organisations outside of the company. As I do not hold line management responsibilities over many of the people in the company who need to work in this area considerable influencing and networking skills are required. Avecia wishes to reposition itself in the application of technical standards and move more towards industry norms and wider use of professional judgement in place of prescriptive standards. I am leading this culture change in the C/E community. This is a significant challenge given the history of the company and requires great determination and leadership qualities to succeed.
