PRIOR EXPERIENCE:

10 November 2001- 8 February 2002

Entec North, Northwich

As a Principal Design engineer leading the design of various structures on the Oswestry Water Treatment Plant project (The Sludge Press Building, The Chemical Building, The Ozone Chamber, The Sludge Thickening Tanks, The Anthracite Trap, The MCC Buildings), including the co-ordination of the project activities between the project various parties.

10 November 2000 - 23 October 2001

Woh Hup Pte Ltd, Singapore

As a Technical Manager reporting to the executive directors, and heading a technical department of: 2 design engineers, a tendering co-ordinator, a planner, a technician, and a secretary. The department formed the forefront interface with the company's various consultants, clients and authorities, promoting the company's technical capabilities and position among the top few contractors in Singapore.

The company is a G8 (top) grade and specialises in "design and build" high-rise condominium buildings and heavy civil works (LRT and MRT stations, bored and cut & cover tunnels, underground cut & cover expressways). The company's typical annual turnover is in the region of S$500M.

The role of the technical department is to provide technical support to tendering & construction activities, appraise the consultants' analyses and provide alternative (economical and buildable) designs, provide temporary works schemes and designs, appraise and advise on the proposed water proofing systems, prepare tender programs and assist site managers with pre-construction programmes. Site problem solving was at the heart of the technical department role which involved many serious problems encountered in the tunnelling and high-rise building projects caused by various design and/or construction substandard practices.

I also worked on introducing new earth retaining schemes (in Marine Clay) in conjunction with a number of ground stabilisation techniques using cement or lime.

During my tenure, I endeavoured to promote the department's managerial and technical standards by: introducing time sheets costing system; issuing various technical advisory notes; planning a training program for the staff through courses, seminars and in-house work-shops; expanding on the use of relevant published technical papers, codes of practice and other technical institutions' publications; purchasing of various up-to-date structural and geotechnical software; and promoting & appraising the use of buildable schemes and designs. Projects details are available on request.
