Filtronic Broadband Ltd, Newton Aycliffe (Co Durham), England.

Third Academic Year, Industrial Placement.

Job Title: Manufacturing Engineering Development Student

Purpose of role: The main focus of this role involved supporting the functional testing and assembly of broadband transceiver products. This involved working closely with the Production, Manufacturing engineering team, and Quality and Process Engineers on short and medium goals.

Summary of responsibilities: I worked closely and supported engineers testing hardware within the manufacturing engineering team and looked at all current projects. I liased between Production and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure smooth transition to volume manufacturing incorporating continuous improvement. I also took part in the continuous improvement activities (Kaizen) and I assigned test hardware and equipment issues. I ensured Quality standards are adhered to, at all times, the setting up, calibration and monitoring of production and LAB equipment, procuring spares and organising repairs as required.

Main tasks: I provided day-to-day hardware and technical support within the production environment. I implemented preventive maintenance on new test jigs and continually review and improve. I generate some Documentation including Operations Instructions, trouble shooting procedures and provision of training documentation. Carried out training within production when required. I did some research and procured equipment and spares as required for new projects and products.

Electrician.

It involved two general types of electrical work: Construction work, which included reading blueprints, wiring, installing, and testing electrical systems; and maintenance work, which involved troubleshooting, testing, and fixing already installed, improperly functioning, electrical systems.

Purpose of role: I had to provide day-to-day technical support to our customers by way of telephone, on-site visits and remote access. I also had the opportunity to work closely with business executives, as well as I received on-going training as needed.

PERSONAL PROFILE.

Computing experience.

Good academic working knowledge of the OrCAD, C and C++ program languages, Matlab/simulink, and Microprocessor skills acquired at Northumbria University and also fair understanding of VBA, labview and OutCAD software acquired in industry placement. Good working knowledge of spreadsheets including Microsoft Word, Excel Power point and use of Internet.

Communication and Team work

Good Communication skills gained from participating in and chairing parochial and diocesans meetings. I have been able to issue clear and concise advice to others with people of all levels, receiving instructions and working with others in authority.

Working in a manufacturing engineering team during my placement I have been able to develop my working skills on team projects within a team-based culture, involving planning, organisation, co-ordination, and responsibility.

Problem solving

Ability to prioritise my workload. A flexible attitude with the ability to work under pressure. As the Co-ordinator of the Altar Ministry Association I had to find solutions to group problems in a calm and efficient manner, and in my industry placement I learned to organise my workload and to work under pressure while still delivering the task successfully on time.

Languages.

Fluent in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, a little of Italian and also good working knowledge Ronga, Xangana and Zulu.

INTERESTS & ACHIEVEMENTS.

Activities (Interests)

I enjoy activities such as excursions and visits to places of interest with groups drawn from local church and international students associations. I spend my leisure time in sports activity especially football and jogging, and also enjoying reading religious and scientific books.





Achievements.

My greatest achievement so far, has been to come to Europe to continue my studies at University following three years of hard endeavour searching for a Scholarship, Vatican Scholarship Scheme. I successfully finished my placement in Filtronics and I did well in my final project designing "Component Locator Software", by combining the Visual Basic and Excel spread sheet, which is still being used by the manufacturers and diagnosticians to help locate components on the PCB.
