CAREER HISTORY

1993 - To date FREELANCE TRANSLATOR/INTERPRETER

Set up a successful business translating technical and scientific documents into Portuguese and interpreting for the Police and for companies receiving training in the UK (machinery, IT systems, business, etc). Documents translated range from Safety Data Sheets, Health & Safety and Patents to Instruction and Maintenance Manuals for Heavy Machinery, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Documents.

1991 - 1992 INETI, Portugal: Visiting Principal Investigator

Set up priority areas for applied research and development in the field of Environment based on EU and Portuguese environmental laws, establishing first contacts with potential clients.

1986 - 1991 M&I MATERIALS LTD, Manchester, UK: Project Manager

Evaluated technical and economical feasibility of producing NdFeB permanent magnets from initial lab trials to production, through testing and statistical process control and optimisation. As a result of having discovered a novel approach for hot pressing (co-authored UK Patent GB 2 235 700 B) General Motors achieved major savings in various aspects of their USA magnet production. Managed joint EEC project on magnetic materials with other EEC partners, providing the "industry link" leading to the success of the project.

1981 - 1984 SORCERY METALS INC., N Carolina, USA: Research Engineer

Set-up and managed a research laboratory that supported a pilot plant operation for the secondary recovery of Cobalt from various sources. Successfully designed and developed a process to recover tungsten from used cemented carbide tool bits.

1980 - 1981 CETEM/CTA, Brazil: Project Engineer

New trials on Carajás copper ore increased recovery of copper. Full programme for the recovery of by-products and reduction of metal's waste of potential value from zinc manufacture submitted to third party.

(Prior to this she managed the Department of Metallurgy, as deputy to the Director, as well as lecturing in Chemistry, Materials and Metallurgy at the University of Lourenço Marques).
