Denso is the third largest global first tier automotive supplier with a turnover of £14.5 billion and a workforce of over 100,000. Denso was initially part of Toyota and continues to operate with the same enthusiasm for lean manufacturing techniques: Toyota Production System (TPS).

Denso Marston has a turnover of £100 million, over 1000 employees and designs and manufactures cooling systems (radiator, charge air cooler, oil cooler & fuel cooler) for the top automotive, truck, construction and tractor manufactures including Toyota, Honda, Jaguar, Volvo, John Deere, Scania and CNH.

VB Production Engineering Assistant Manager (reporting to the GM)

Vacuum braze (VB) sales contribute approximately £53 million in sales. VB production incorporates all aspects of manufacturing: pressing, tube mill, core build (fin coil, radiator, oil cooler, charge air cooler), manual and automated assembly machines, brazing, production lines, cells and modular assembly.

Responsibilities include

· Managing Kaizen teams and training team members in Continuous Improvement (CI) techniques.

· New Product Introduction (NPI) including associated new machines, tooling, development and SOP.

· 5 Year Continuous Improvement Plan - detailing the strategy to meet the company and departmental KPI's and Long Term Sales Plan (LTSP), including resources and investment required, training needs, process flow improvements and other associated lean activities.

· Motivating and managing a team of 6 Lean Engineers.

· Capacity planning to ensure the long term sales plan (LTSP) can be achieved.

· Capital Investment Plan (£8 million budget) to meet the LTSP.

· Cost Down - removal of non value adding activity and material yield improvement (£400k target) through managing Lean Engineers and their CI Teams.

· Managing departmental budget (£385k).

· Supporting Quality to achieve Right First Time - 0 defects through Poke Yoke; prevention rather than detection.

Achievements include

· 40% improvement in OEE of Tracpak Radiator Build Cell through managing Kaizen Team.

· 83% reduction in changeover time of Tracpak Radiator Build Cell through SMED activity.

· 200% increase in VB oil cooler cell productivity through process improvement leading to removal of 3 rd shift saving £90k in labour cost.

· 68% reduction in Tracpak radiator Lead Time through VSM activity.

· £70k reduction in Tracpak radiator WIP through introduction of Kanban system.

· £344k cost down savings achieved.

· £830k saving in special transport cost due to increased flexibility, reduced changeover time and Hejunka Leveling.

· Increasing VB Production's 5S Level from 38% TO 63% through conduction 5S Work Shops.

Valeo Transmission Ltd - Halifax Feb 2001 to Dec 2003

Valeo are the fifth largest global first tier automotive supplier. VT Ltd. supplies major automotive manufactures with transmissions systems including Toyota, Ford, and Renault.

Senior Manufacturing Engineer

Responsibilities include

· Managing Quality and CI teams of 10 people.

· 5S Champion - to improve 5S Standards within the company through managing 'work shops.'

· SMED Champion - to improve SMED knowledge and activity through managing 'work shops.'

· Co-ordination of NPI projects.

· Cost Down (£40k target) - improvement in material yield.

· New machine procurement - specification, contract, development, manufacture and installation (£600k budget).

Achievements include

· 70% improvement in Forge Cell efficiency from work standardisation and SMED activity.

· 30% reduction of Forge Cell changeover time from SMED activity.

· 92% reduction in start up scrap from process analysis and standardizing the procedure.

· 80% reduction in forging 'micro' stops through root cause analysis.

· Cost Down saving of £50k (material yield) through statistical analysis of cutting process and tooling design modifications.

Structherm Ltd. - Huddersfield Sep 1997 to Feb 2001

Stuctherm has a turnover of £3 million with 36 employees. Structherm manufactures cladding systems for new build and refurbishment of local government properties.

Project Engineer

Responsibilities include

· Manage and motivate a production team of 22 people.

· Recruit, train, motivate and develop team members.

· Co-coordinating of all production and engineering projects projects.

· Production maintenance and machine reliability.

· Company Health & Safety.

· Operations/Maintenance/R&D/H&S budget (£385k).

· New machine procurement (£250k).

Achievements include

· 300% increase in productivity through introducing 5S, SMED activity and work standardisation.

· 25% reduction in product cost from material yield improvements.

· 50% reduction in machine breakdown through development and introduction of preventative maintenance program (PM).

· Implementation of £250k production line and start of two shift working.

· Developed a bespoke MRP system to improve information flow between departments.

· Developed and implemented procedures/manuals for control of stock, maintenance, break down, handling and H&S.
