EDUCATION

September 1999 - June 2004 UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE

MEng in Chemical Engineering

This course has provided me with a broad-based education on a range of Chemical Engineering issues, including process design and operations. A key motivation for choosing this course was the variety of specialist teaching areas covered and the IChemE accreditation.

Subjects studied include:

Air and Water Pollution Control, Chemical Engineering Design, General and Strategic Management, Membrane Processes, Process Control and Instrumentation, Process Economics, Process Fluid Flow, Process Heat Transfer, Process Thermodynamics, Safety and Loss Prevention, Separation and Transfer Processes.

August 1994 - June 1999 Garnock Academy, Kilbirnie

Higher Grades (1999): Chemistry (A), Computing (A), Physics (A), Maths (B), English (C)

Standard Grades (1998): 8 subjects at Grade 1

WORK EXPERIENCE

April 2005 - Present Weir LGE Process

Process Design Engineer

This role has given me a wide range of responsibilities encompassing the detailed design of onshore terminals, cargo plant and offshore installations. Key tasks have included:

· Lead Process Engineer for the detailed design of an LPG storage terminal in Iran. This role

involved working with a cross-functional team to deliver a broad portfolio of work, including:

- PFD / P&ID development

- Line list preparation

- Sizing and specification of safety relief valves

- Participating in engineering review meetings with the client.

· Participating in two HAZOP studies in Singapore for a FSO facility.

· Attending cargo plant audits in Ukraine and Singapore.

I have also performed the following duties for a range of marine projects:

· Mass and energy balances

· Hydraulic calculations and control valve specifications

· Preparation of commissioning procedures

· Evaluation of vendor quotations

This role has offered opportunities for Continuous Professional Development and strengthened my commitment to attain IChemE accreditation.

October 2004 - March 2005 Foster Wheeler Energy Limited

Process Assistant

This post involved working as part of a multidisciplinary team on a FEED study for Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) to upgrade its condensate refinery in Dubai. During the project I worked on a range of activities, including:

· Hazardous Material Schedules

· Secretary at a HAZOP study

· Completing Process Specifications and Instrument Datasheets

· Updating PFDs and P&IDS.

This experience enabled me to develop strong communication skills as I had to obtain information from other team members and keep individuals up-to-date on my progress. I also enhanced my time-management skills as I had to meet regular deadlines and prioritise tasks on a daily basis.

February 2004 - May 2004 British Sugar plc.

Research Student

During my final semester at University I carried out an Industrial Placement with British Sugar. The main objective of the project was to find a commercially attractive method of increasing the generation capacity of the Combined Heat and Power plant at the Wissington factory in Norfolk.

I investigated the technical and economic feasibility of augmenting the power output of the aeroderivative gas turbine with a spray intercooling (SPRINT) system. The project enabled me to gain a good working knowledge of the operation of the gas turbine and its maintenance schedule. As I conducted my study, I had to consider the effects of the upgrade on ancillary equipment and ensure that the factory's electricity export limits were not exceeded.

The project involved substantial networking with key personnel, including regular meetings with the CHP Technical Development Manager and consulting with a SPRINT Commissioning Engineer, from General Electric in the United States. This allowed me to enhance my teamworking and communication skills.

I recommended that the SPRINT upgrade would be feasible provided the company could secure substantial discounts on the system. Using the results of my investment appraisal, the company put together a capital proposal which was accepted and the upgrade took place in August 2005, to coincide with the major overhaul of the turbine.
