I am a professional manager and qualified mechanical and electrical engineer. I am experienced in automated handling, packaging and process systems, furthermore I am multi-skilled in finance, marketing and technical sales. This has enabled me to provide an excellent record of both business and technical development. I am thoroughly results driven and enjoy both the financial rewards and work satisfaction success brings.

As an Automation and control systems engineer, my abilities are enhanced through my experience and knowledge gained as an electrical and mechanical engineer with managerial experience. This enables me to quickly assess the project requirements together with the controls required for a system to meet operational functionality and maintenance needs. Additionally my skills provide me with the experience to supervise staff, manage contractors and manage the technical requirements of a project to meet design, cost and time constraints. With my financial acumen being developed from the management of contracts and P&L responsibility of a UK subsidiary business.

As an electrical engineer, I have the experience of providing the design and implementation for the system control, of which instrumentation; drive systems (inverter and servo controls) and process control form a part. Having a hands on approach my skills, knowledge and experience also enables me to undertake the commissioning across disciplines.

I am able to provide the control system and associated documentation that includes design guide lines, risk assessment, functional and software design and control specifications, following through with both the design, testing and implementation of system electrical control and PLC control software, MMI, HMI and / or SCADA.

As a commissioning engineer my experience includes: full electrical test and commissioning, testing of software including SCADA systems, hardware, full I/O, network communications, system safety procedures, together with design guide line, documentation checking and validation.

My experience and knowledge, gained from a wide section of industry, allows me to provide well structured and effective control code and operator interface that provides the end user with systems that are easy to use and maintain.

1996 to present Self Employed Engineering Projects and Systems

I have managed a variety of projects and installations for customers that have included automated handling systems, packaging lines, high-bay warehousing, and process plant and performance improvements. Working across a range of automated handling and process systems I have implemented, supervised and undertaken the electrical design, build and installation of equipment. I am also a competent and experienced control systems engineer, and have taken the responsibility for writing the software and the commissioning to meet operational requirements for process plant and automated systems. Recent projects include:

Repower - Site Project Manager for a Є30M wind farm at Ffynnon Oer, South Wales, responsible for the final stages of erection followed by electrical installation and commissioning to deliver 32MW at 66kV to the National Grid (16off 2MW wind turbines). Electrical site manager at Caton Moor Wind Farm (8 off 2MW wind turbines).

Cerulean - Mechanical design for a gas analyser. Development, electrical and software design for a tube packing machine. Development and electrical design of an instrument for measuring porosity of cigarette paper.

Gypsum Technologies - Undertaking Mill process control and electrical design and specifications.

British Gypsum - Control Systems Engineer

Robertsbridge site - Process plant and automation upgrades. Providing the SCADA interface for recipe control and the Access data base for recipe management together with the PLC code for plant operation and functionality. Plant wide alarm handling update and SCADA consolidation. Production support for all aspects of plant control systems.

East Leake site - Process plant and automation upgrades, to improve production performance and availability. Undertaking the implementation of system design, control of contractors and providing the system control upgrade with Siemens S7, TI505, Allen Bradley SLC 500, LGX 5000, interfaced with Siemens WinCC SCADA. Plus production support for all aspects of plant control systems.

1993 to 1996 Director MSK Packaging Ltd

Employed initially as General Manager, the post developed to Regional Director for the UK and Eire, reporting to the Group Chairman based in Germany. Selling, supplying and supporting automated handling and packaging systems; with full P&L responsibility I developed the UK business from insolvency to a positive position within 3 years. I achieved this success by formulating and implementing an aggressive business development plan together with an effective marketing campaign, whilst maintaining strong relationships with customers. As part of the business growth I initiated and developed the UK based service centre providing 24-hour service support to our customers, which allowed me to develop a UK based design and manufacture facility for automated handling systems to accompany the packaging systems supplied from Germany.

1991 to 1993 Self Employed Phillips Automation Services

Working initially as a mechanical design engineer undertaking the design of mechanical handling systems for the automotive industry, a post was secured as Contracts Manager working within Pedigree Petfoods, undertaking the management of a new £4.5M process line.

As the Contracts Manager I was responsible for the joint management of the project with the addition of project financial management and reporting to the directors. This responsibility included the management of multi-disciplined teams to achieve design, installation and process control requirements. Within a secondary role I was responsible for 6 site supervisors, the sale and management of minor design and installation works thereby ensuring the continuity of employment for my team.

1985 to 1991 Head of Projects LK Ltd

Employed initially as a project engineer, reporting to the works manager, the post developed to head of projects reporting to the manufacturing director, where we manufactured and supplied high accuracy inspection systems with associated component handling. To fulfill my brief as project manager, I implemented stock control and purchasing systems, JIT philosophy, production planning and control, technical support for the sales team and provided the post sale customer liaison. The post evolved to the management of the project cycle from inception to Customer acceptance, together with the management of multi-disciplined teams to produce bespoke systems, achieving both technical and financial requirements. Responsible for 3 project Managers, and accountable for US$30m department projects, I was responsible for the management and development of leading edge technology projects predominantly for the US defence and aerospace industry.

1979 to 1985 Engineering Technician British Gypsum Ltd

Providing the engineering support for new products development, reporting to the project manager. As a member of a small development team I was actively involved in the development of new process equipment developing 11 new products, one of which was taken from the laboratory to full-scale production and point of sale.
