Summary

A highly motivated and flexible individual who has experience on a large variety of manufacturing projects at all levels. Currently working as a Production Engineer to Schneider Electric Ltd (who are based in Leeds) providing expertise on Lean Manufacturing.

Prospers when positioned in a team-based environment but who also has the confidence and initiative to work alone. Excellent interpersonal and communicative skills have ensured the achievement of pleasing results whilst ambitious nature certifies continuing personal development.

Education

2000-2003 UNIVERSITY OF TEESSIDE (full time study)

2002-2003 MSc ADVANCED MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS

MSc Advanced Manufacturing Systems - Modules studied include Global Competitiveness [including the study of Benchmarking, Just-In-Time philosophy (JIT) and Material Resource Planning (MRP)], Material Science, CADCAM, Finite Element Analysis (dynamic and stress analysis), Artificial Intelligence, Quality, Change Empowerment and Leadership, Machining Processes, Measurement and Sensors and Manufacturing Reliability.

MSc Work-based Project in Conjunction with Hedley Purvis Ltd.

The project was concerned with lean philosophies i.e. the reduction of waste and the studying of workflow methods within the engineering services division. Each process was mapped using modern techniques, for each type of serviced equipment, and the waste elements identified. A plan was then drawn up to reduce the wasteful elements. For example, unnecessary distances travelled by the product during the servicing operations, these can then be removed, resulting in a saving in labour hours. By studying the workshop layout and incorporating specified work area flow lines, such as "U" shapes, and by placing only the necessary workshop tools and materials required, the servicing time, distance travelled and manually handling by engineers was reduced to a minimum.

2000-2002 BEng (HONS) MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (2:2)

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering - core modules studied include: Dynamics, Stress Analysis, Fluids and Thermodynamics, CAD/CAM & FEA, Quality, Engineering Design and Material Science. The course emphasised the use of various packages such as I-DEAS, Microsoft Excel, Matlab-Simulink to aid in the solution of engineering problems.

Final year project was an investigation into the theoretical work of Taylor and Merchant. Using a tool wear monitoring system within the university, experiments where conducted into the study of tool wear of high speed steel tools (HSS) at different cutting speeds and rake angles. On completion of the tool wear study further work was conducted by examining the flank wear of high speed steel tools at varying cutting speeds.

Grade Obtained - Batchelor of Engineering, Second Class (Honours), Lower Division (2:2)

Employment History (only relevant positions noted)

August 2004 - Present,Schneider Electric Limited, Leeds(full time)

Current Position held: Production Engineer.

Working on a 2 year duration project, titled "Industrial Excellence".

The purpose of the project is to implement Lean Manufacturing techniques across all production lines within the Medium Voltage Division at the Schneider Electric site at Leeds.

Benefits of the project include:

· Reduction in shop floor surface area of 30%+

· Increase in productivity, typically 30%

· Reduction in labour hours across the site, culminating in a saving of £1.4 million, currently £1 million achieved. (20 months to date)

Day to day duties include:

· Line design/development using lean principles, balancing workstations +30% for flexibility, to aid in the ability to produce the maximum production levels, to satisfy customer service.

· Split work elements into leans cells, working with operatives to design the new work cells

· Setting up of performance KPI's to track the progress made in each cell/production line, operator performance & customer service

· Ensure that materials can be stored within an ergonomic zone, efficiently and in line with production demands on each workstation.

· Develop a kanban card system for workstation material replenishment using the "Little Train" philosophy.

· Training operators using the "Lean Game", to communicate lean principles

· Supporting the production line managers to solve day to day issues that result in lost production

· Monitor working procedures, ensuring that they are up to date and available to shop floor operatives via a pc terminal.

· Support all production areas, ensuring sufficient tooling & fixtures are available for shop floor operatives.

2003 - 2004 Burdon engineering limited, Stokesley (full time)

In between completing the MSc and commencing work at Schneider, I returned to my roots and worked for Burdon Engineering Ltd as a machinist. My role was to machine numerous cast items for Caterpillar UK using various CNC machines. This was an opportunity for me to gain experience of CNC machines, something which during my apprenticeship at Harker's, I seldom had opportunity to use.

1996-2000Harker's Engineering Limited, Stockton(Full time)

I worked at Harker's Engineering Ltd as a toolmaker, using lathes and milling and grinding machines to produce tools to be used in manufacture, regularly working to within small tolerances.

Working along side both maintenance and quality departments to produce re-work items or specific components needed for maintaining large CNC machines.

1995-1996Teesside Training Enterprise, Middlesbrough(Full TIME)

I worked as an apprentice studying various aspects of electrical and mechanical engineering, reinforcing the day release study at Teesside Tertiary College. After the completion of my initial training I decided to specialise in machining as it interested me most, producing a component from start to completion, that could be used to serve a purpose, as oppose to theoretical tasks.

Also gained NVQ Level 2 certificate

Interests

I enjoy team sports and play football on Saturday afternoon's for St Mary's College OB.

I have also represented North Riding County Football Association abroad in Germany, taking part in an international tournament.

I also enjoy playing pool and have participated in the local area pool league and I also plan on taking up Judo again as I was Yorkshire Champion at my weight category when I was younger.

Competencies

I have excellent knowledge of various software packages such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Project.

I have also used the complex 3D modelling package, SDRC's I-DEAS, whilst studying for my degree and masters, being competent in a variety of applications such as:

· Finite Element Analysis

· Heat, vibration and linear static analysis

· Solid 3-D modelling

· Drafting and generative machining applications.

I am also very competent at CAD having been awarded a Young Engineers Certificate from the CADCAM Centre, using AutoCadR13. I recently completed an AutoCad 2005 refresher training course at Schneider Electric, a package that I use on a daily basis.

I have also held a First Aid at Work certificate acting as a First Aider at Harker's Engineering Ltd.

I also hold a clean driving license since April 1998.
