Appointed as the Site Maintenance Engineering Manager
My Responsibilities:
As the Maintenance Engineering Manager for this top tier COMAH site, as well as being the sites mechanical responsible person, I am charged with managing the resources of the sites Maintenance Department, hence I provide an effective service to the company, constituting maintenance, design and project activities in all engineering disciplines. I also ensure that activities carried out within my area of responsibility are in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements (ATEX, DSEAR, PSSR etc) and with company health, safety and environmental policies. I also ensure that engineering site good practices and procedures are adopted and employed. I ensure that employees within my area of responsibility are adequately trained, equipped, instructed and supervised.
I have full responsibility and accountability of the site revenue maintenance budget of £1.1 million per annum, and CAPEX control as per project budget limits (up to £90,000)
I am responsible for the upkeep and development of new Good Engineering Practices and site engineering standards and policies, and I am responsible for inventory management from critical stores stock through to stores inventory management practices such as consignment stock authorisation.
I identify risks / hazards in the working areas via scheduled inspections and to ensure corrective actions are taken. I participate in, and can lead, HAZOP studies on projects and new product introductions, as required.
I am responsible for monitoring compliance of employees within area of responsibility with HSE policies and procedures and take action to correct any deficiencies.
I guide and approve actions to ensure maintenance of an effective inspection schedule via planned preventive maintenance tasks and ensuring site compliance with Pressure Systems Regulations and other relevant regulations (IPPC, HASAWA, LOLER, PUWER, COSHH and site COMAH requirements).
I develop and implement the site maintenance strategy and set targets with Operations Management Team to ensure plant availability to maximise production. This is often achieved utilising RCA and FMECA studies.
I manage the operation of the site's utilities and services to ensure compliance with statutory regulations and the efficient use of energy.

October 2003 Lubrizol Ltd, Bromborough, Cheshire
to June 2005
Appointed as the Site Mechanical Plant Engineer
My Responsibilities:
As the Plant Engineer, I was required to provide Mechanical technical support to the site. In particular the aim of my role was to lead the development and implementation of site mechanical strategies, capital projects, modification and continuous improvement engineering activities ensuring that these meet or exceed the requirements of the Bromborough site's mission and objectives. This includes direct leadership of projects, contributing Mechanical elements to multi-disciplinary projects led by others and also co-ordination of other Mechanical projects through contract engineering resource.
Also I provided a high level of Technical Support to the site, this encompassed a full range of Mechanical systems (i.e. Pumps, Vessels, Piping, and Minor Civil works) and in particular includes H&S elements.
I managed site capital expenditure with budget accountability and control of up to £50,000, and occasionally beyond, for the sites Mechanical projects and modifications.
My job role included providing cover for the Engineering Function Head in times of absence and sickness etc and to whom I normally reported the status of codal and statutory compliance, projects, budgets and other site improvement initiatives.
To the Process Engineers I provided Mechanical input to their activities including completion of Mechanical work as required on projects. I also liaised with the Process Engineers so as to allow them to provide any necessary process engineering input on my Mechanical projects/activities.
With the Site Operations (Production, Planning, Shipping, QA) department I improved Mechanical aspects of existing operations to meet new production/quality demands and SHE requirements.
I liaised with our Responsible Care department as Health, Safety and Environmental advice providers, prior to implementing new products, processes or changes.
I also had liaisons with Lubrizol's Key Contacts Externally i.e. Mechanical Contractors & equipment suppliers from whom best value was sought in achieving the required service and equipment supplies and ensure that all activities carried out by the contractors/service providers used on site, within area my of responsibility, where completed in a Safe and environmentally acceptable manner. Specifically, as a minimum all new and existing regulatory/statutory requirements (PSSR, ATEX, etc) would be met or exceeded and full compliance with the site HS&E policy, standards and procedures striven for.
To aid in the safe management of site modifications and project implementation, I was trained by an independent company (ABB) to be a HAZOP team leader. [Hazard study techniques and how to lead them]. I had also completed an IOSH approved 'Managing Safely' course, as well as had BS EN 61508 & BS IEC 61511 Safety Integrity Level appreciation training by Aker Kvaerner Services.
As the site Responsible Mechanical Engineer, I provided advice in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager, on regulatory requirements to be fulfilled by the Bromborough site. Therefore, I needed to understand and maintain an up-to-date awareness of the current and forthcoming HS&E legalisation and their impact on the Mechanical improvement activities on site. E.g. Atex and DSEAR regulations

Appointed as an Engineering Team Leader / Manager
My Responsibilities:
As the Engineering Team Leader, I was primarily responsible for the execution and co-ordination of the day-to-day workload that needed to be completed within my production area. I achieved this by allocation of resource and labour to the tasks and I communicated this through to the relevant trade groups so as they understood exactly what was required of them on that day. Motivating and coaching the team was an important and challenging part of my role to ensure maximising productivity from the team was achieved, and ensuring that the planned workload was completed on time, in full. I was expected to ensure the management's needs and requests are conveyed to the teams and I had to ensure that the team is working to its maximum potential. I was familiar with, and had to deal with, unionised work teams and the respective issues that could arise. I was expected to resource any extra labour and resource from our contract database to ensure the workload for that day was completed, and I also sourced any materials or resources that the technicians required, thus allowing the implementation of their jobs as efficiently and cost effectively as possible and hence maximising their productivity. With a degree almost finished, coupled to 12 years of engineering experience, I also provided a high level of engineering support and both conceived and developed ideas that maximised performance of the plants and their equipment; this too was quite a pivotal role of my day-to-day workload.
