Maintenance on all types of wire - drawing and special- purpose machines, including manufacture of

new components via toolroom. Qualified as universal miller, grinder, tin-smith and fitter/turner.

Approximately one year spent in design office on drawing board (Tool & Special Purpose machines)

1966 - 69. STRUCTURAL / PIPING DRAUGHTSMAN

(CHERRY TREE MACHINE COMPANY) - BLACKBURN.

Site surveys on hospitals, laundries & various industrial premises for proposed installation of large

drying machines. Conceptual layouts, followed by design / arrangement / fabrication drawings for

complete fabrication

1969 - 71. STRUCTURAL/MECH. DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN (GREENBANK ENGINEERING - BLACKBURN )

Proposal Layouts of large dryers for the paper, bakery and carpet industries. Complete machine (plant) arrangement civil foundations (loadings) pipe trenches & drainage culverts followed by fabrication drawings, including: conveyors, chain drives, light / medium steelwork (support steel and platforms), sheet metal and pipework - isometric and detail.

1971 - 74. STRUCTURAL/MECH. DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN (MUIR - HILL, GLOUCESTER )

Structural platework layout/detail on heavy earth - moving equipment - mechanical shovels, diggers etc. Mechanical work involved steering mechanisms and gear trains (boxes).

1974 - 77. STRUCTURAL DESIGN / DETAIL DRAUGHTSMAN (REDPATH - DORMAN - LONG, FIFE - SCOTLAND)

Layout of large platform / walkway projects for the oil - rigs followed by design / detail fabrication drawings. Conceptual layouts / design / detail of large pipe - supports. Many access - stairways and ladder configurations.

1977 - 79. STRUCTURAL DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN

(PILKINGTON GLASS - ST. HELENS)

Involved work on various engineering disciplines connected with the production of glass by the "flotation process. Initial layout of ducted air schemes including demolition of existing walls, new brickwork & reinforced concrete slabs for steelwork & ducts cooling the furnace walls, conveyors and associated drives and structures, piping isometric/sheet metal / layouts / detail and furnace support steelwork to include access stairways and all platforms.

1979 - 88. STRUCTURAL DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN. (ROBERTS CONSTRUCTION - JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA )

Initial project: Van Dykes Drift - Coal Mine.

Schematic layout of conveyors, transfer houses, chutes and hoppers. Layout / design / detail on crushing, screening and slurry plant steelwork, civil foundations, lined concrete tanks, pipe & drainage culverts. Have worked extensively on both coal and gold mines including on - site supervision of contractors at erection stage. After completion of 2 year contract, worked freelance with nearly all of the mining houses in and around Johannesburg.

1988 - 92. SITE ENGINEER. (WHITBREAD BREWERIES - SAMLESBURY)

Main duties included supervision of contract labour and general trouble - shooting on installation of new projects including struct. Steel erecrtion, excavation of site for incorporation of reinforced concrete gullies for pipework, water & drainage. Design/Instal numerous st.steel inspection platforms, hand-railing & stairways also several new conveyors in bottling plant. Design layouts for refurbishment of reception area largely St.Steel, Aluminium & Glass with concealed lighting. Co-ordinated engineering functions and contractors on new Alcohol Recovery plant, yeast press and brewhouse.

1991 - 92. MATTHEW-HALL SALE-CHESHIRE

Structural Design/Layout of waste container handling plant with all associated civil/concrete work, foundations loadings. Overhead conveyor system for transfer of waste containers onto rail transport bogie, which in turn transported the containers to the selected storage area.

1992 - 94. BJ STRUCTURES, BLAKBURN - LANCASHIRE.

Started my own business doing basically design/detail for clients in and around Blackburn, the most notable being a series of complex electrical sheet metal cabinets, a bridge over the M5 at Hallam. Also of note was a children's primary school in Oldham with an unusual hexagonal roof, external walk-around balcony with st.st./glass balustrades & spiral st/case and the steelwork for St, Mary's Hospital in Manchester.

1994 - 96 STRUCTURAL / MECHANICAL DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN (SIMON - HOLDERS - BURY)

Months training on computer I.B.M. mainframe - Cadam. Consequent plant layout on large paper making plant in the USA. Pressure vessels, tanks, isometric layouts of pipework, conceptual layouts of all support steelwork, civils-foundation loadings, liason with struct.engineers on concrete & reinforcement schedules, platforms and all access ways. Eventual fabrication drawings for complete plant.

1996 - 97 STRUCTURAL DRAUGHTSMAN. (MORSON INTERNATIONAL LTD. - MANCHESTER.)

Various contracts of a mech. / struct. bias. Mainly conceptual structural layouts covering proposed plant modifications for BNFL Sellafield, some flats & retail premises refurb (more architectural work)

Mechanical work involved conveyor design / detail, and a mechanized waste handling plant for BNFL

1997 - 99 MECHANICAL / STRUCTURAL DESIGN DRAUGHTSMAN (HYTEK SERVICES LTD. - CHESHIRE)

Various mechanical / structural contracts. Currently working as both struct / mech. designer on assembly jig and tooling for the C-130 (Hercules) assembly line.

1999 - 00 STRUCTURAL/MECH. DESIGNER

(BNFL - SELLAFIELD, CUMBRIA. (TEL. 019467 88169/8

Member of Design Support Team based on site at Sellafield. Duties involved with the commissioning of the new MOX plant, and was a trouble-shooting role. If in the course of commissioning, a certain piece of equipment or mechanism is found to be defective, it was my function to go out on site, measure up and come back with remedial designs using AutoCADR14.

2000 - 00 STRUCTURAL DESIGNER (Bae SAMLESBURY NR. BLACKBURN ) Design Engineer (CATIA) on assembly jigs for Eurofighter centre fuse section. Design of large boring fixtures for main frames and ancilliary drilling jigs Transferred to Front Fuse, currently working on various assembly jigs. JAN '01-AUG '01 FABER DESIGN CONSULTANCY - LEYLAND, PRESTON.

Design Engineer (Catia) Conceptual designs initially for various aircraft component and assembly transport structures. Layout and design of staging/platforms for the assembly of Eurofighter. Design of test-rig for Eurofighter foreplane.

AUG - MAR 03 RTS THURNALL - IRLAM, MANCHESTER.

Design Engineer (Autocad R2000) Conceptual designs for the decommissioning of Pile 1 (Sellafield) Design proposals involving access to the core and proposed methodology for the cutting and removal of the core restraint steelwork. Proposal methods for removing the charge face plugs by means of a mobile extraction machine was another aspect of the concept work. After one year I moved onto the H.A. Cells (Sellafield B-Tech centre) working mainly on area 140 & 150 before being seconded to Advanced Robotics for the design layouts on a three-axis cutting machine to be used by surgeons in hospital operating theatres. Currently designing large platform layouts for the new MOX plant.

Mar 03 - Date

Due to the decline in contracting re-opened original business B.J. Structures have worked short spells for 2-3 months for consultancy firms on flats,offices & retail premises,mostly architectural as opposed to steelwork (glass & aluminium) Also employed by West Yorkshire Co. to shop detail large pipe gantry & platform/stair project on site. For the past 2 months worked from home on various projects shopfitting,refurbs & steelwork for local fabricators.

Member of team involved with the remedial design engineering on the B.T.C. glove boxes (Sellafield)

Faults identified during works testing, or incorporation of new design criteria make up the bulk of the

work. Certain areas of the existing design are not glove-box friendly which also created a large slice of

the problems.

MECHANICAL DESIGN CHECKER

V.A.I. manufacture slab casting machines which are sold all over the world to steel producing

companies. My function is to check the 3-D models a) that they are accurate and to the requisite

design criteria,and b) that the resultant 2-D manufacturing drawings are correct and to the company

standards. All the work is done using Mechanical Desktop 2005.

Jan 06-Present Mechanical Design Engineer BNFL - SELLAFIELD, CUMBRIA.

Member of the MOX design support team, which surveys the problematic areas on plant and produces

remedial design solutions.Most of the problems appear to be at the tail end of the production line.
