Employment History
(Aug 2003 & ongoing)
CONSULTANT
Since moving from Cornwall, I have consulted for a number of clients from various sectors advising on matters such as Media, Marketing, Public Relations, Funding and Change Management. Working in both the Public and Private arenas, my work has included special projects for B&Q plc (CRM & Change Management strategy) Systems and Process reviews on European Funding for The Government Office for the South East and numerous Media, marketing and PR campaigns for both private sector and charitable bodies. Most recently I have completed a 10 month project at bibic, a Somerset based national childrens' charity, where I was responsible for all media and public relations activities concerning their launch of a £5m fundraising appeal, along with the development and production of a major promotional film. This involved working closely with contributors such and Jo Brand and Tony Hadley.
Having enjoyed success with such a diversity of organisations, I feel confident that my recent experience combined with that of founding the Eden Project, now positions me well to offer any organisation a comprehensive portfolio of creative business leadership skills and media contacts as I seek my next challenge.
(Aug 1996 to Jul 2003)
MEDIA DIRECTOR
CORNWALLTwelve years ago, with a team of just 4, I joined T S in founding the now world famous Eden Project in Cornwall. Upon leaving, we had grown to a team of 650. During my time at Eden I created worldwide media exposure valued in excess of £20 million, resulting in 2 million annual visitors (almost 200% above Business Plan forecasts); and was responsible for the development and direction of all planned Media, PR and Marketing strategies, principles and philosophies.
In addition to developing, directing and implementing the above activities, my time at Eden also encompassed the successful authorship and securing of £86 million of public and private sector funding; business planning and recruitment of senior staff (particularly in relation to retail, catering and the ‘Visitor Experience’), meticulous planning and hosting of all Royal, ministerial, media and celebrity visits (both official and private), partaking personally in over 400 TV interviews, countless radio and press interviews, copywriting of all Media Releases, extensive public speaking and co-ordination of all on-site filming activities for the James Bond movie ‘Die Another Day’. In addition, I closely directed and briefed our board of Trustees, Chairman, Sir Ronnie Hampel (Former chairman of ICI & United Media) and fellow directors in all media matters. Working closely with partners such as Sir Nicholas Grimshaw (architect), McAlpine (main contractor) and the Millennium Commission (primary funder), I ensured that our media approach remained politically astute and aware at all times.
During the early days of Eden’s development (we had no money, no planning consent and many objectors); I fast learnt the importance of effective well-planned communication, tact and diplomacy. Whether via a live national television interview, meetings with Government Ministers, local councillors or a village hall talk; my experience at Eden, along with a deep understanding of Media needs stays with me and remains one of my greatest assets.
(Aug 1995 to Aug 1996)
MARKETING DIRECTOR
THE LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN, CORNWALLWhen I joined it was attracting around 80,000 visitors per annum and attempting to diversify into areas that I identified as being potentially damaging to its future. My first task was to develop a clear Business Management and Marketing Strategy that would allow the company to grow in a controlled and measurable way. Initial actions included the cessation of non-core business activities thereby ensuring greater focus was placed on the development and profitability of the core business. Within just a year, I had largely achieved the streamlining of the operational aspects of the business and significantly improved all revenue generating activities (both on and off site), negotiated and secured a 6 part ‘prime-time’ Channel 4 documentary series on the gardens and put in place a team in whom I had total confidence. Upon my leaving to begin the Eden Project, Heligan had become the UK’s most visited private garden, welcoming some 450,000 visitors a year.
(Jul 1993 to Jul 1995)
MARKETING CONSULTANT
HHB COMMUNICATIONS LTD, LONDONWas Europe’s largest Professional Audio Distributor with an annual turnover in excess of £15m (1994). My experience of both Professional Audio and Marketing led to my being recruited to join HHB to identify and develop the M.I. (musical instrument) side of their product range and distribution activities. This was a market that HHB had not previously explored or exploited. In my two years at HHB and following detailed market analysis, I single-handedly established a UK dealer/retailer network of 54 shops and developed a coherent and distinctive brand identity for the M.I. side of HHB’s activities; which together resulted in an additional contribution to group turnover of £1.7m per annum.
(Apr 1990 to Jun 1993)
DIRECTOR
THE COUPON COLLECTION, YORKSHIREIn partnership with a successful Yorkshire design agency, I founded The Coupon Collection. Devised by myself, The Coupon Collection was to be a carefully targeted and research driven coupon based publication with a twice-yearly circulation of 3 million copies. In conjunction with the UK’s leading redemption centre (NCH in Corby), I developed the data processing systems to ‘double scan’ redeemed coupons enabling us to provide our clients with a full analysis of redemption levels and perhaps more importantly, a classified and detailed breakdown of customer profile and campaign effectiveness.
(Nov 1985 to Mar 1990)
DIRECTOR
THE MUSIC ROOM, SURREYCosting £1.6m, The Music Room was one of the UK’s leading residential recording studios. In addition songwriting and production, I undertook several successful marketing consultancy projects for the ‘Special Projects’ divisions of both EMI and CBS Records. Music production and songwriting for numerous artists - Platinum album awards in Holland, France, Canada.
