Personal Profile:

Confident and articulate outgoing person, having good interpersonal skills, and a strong technical background with over 10 years experience in UNIX Systems Administration mainly in Finance and Telecommunications.

My UNIX experience includes (in order of exposure) HP-UX, Solaris, AIX and Linux. In addition, I have experience with SAN technology, large scale disk arrays (XP, EVA, EMC), Oracle Database support, OpenVMS Systems and Tandem Mainframes.

I possess extensive experience delivering and managing Enterprise Management software including HP Openview Operations and Network Node Manager. Similar experience with Enterprise Backup solutions including HP Data Protector, Veritas Netbackup including ZDB and Oracle Recovery Manager.

In addition to technical competence, I also have a well-balanced business perspective to optimise the benefits of technology for the wider enterprise. I have also developed management and project management skills to compliment my technical abilities.

Major Achievements:

• Installed, configured and managed HP Openview Operations and Network Node Manager for several companies enhancing their capabilities of monitoring their infrastructure and applications.

• Worked extensively on complex HP Data Protector Backup and Recovery solution including delivery, configuration and management. Also to significantly increase throughput, reduce failures and improve reporting capabilities.

• Transitioned new accounts from a purely 1st tier support team into a combined 1st and 2nd tier team, thereby greatly increasing customer satisfaction and system stability and reducing support costs.

• Mentored several team members (UK, Europe and America) to enable skill transfer to wider team, assisting integration of local and off-shore support capability.


Relevant Employment History:

June 2006 – To present: London Stock Exchange

• Solely responsible for the management and support of HP OpenView Operations and Network Node Manager Unix Suite, monitoring the London Stock Exchange’s trading systems and Network Management Systems.

• Additionally responsible for MicroSoft Operations Manager 2005 (MOM) and the management of the upgrade to System Centre Operations Manager 2007 (SCOM)

• Daily template, application and network enhancements to the OpenView and MicroSoft Operations Manager suites incorporating an ITIL based service management process.

• Part of a team of five Unix System Administrators supporting HP and Sun Enterprise Servers. Running in a SAN environment, responsible for disk management and Veritas NetBackup.

June 2003 – May 2006: Clifford Chance

• Implementation and support of a Highly-Available Global Finance System for a Worldwide Legal Corporation.

• Installed and configured HP Openview Operations enhancing their capabilities of monitoring their infrastructure and applications. Integrated Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) and Windows NT Servers with HP Openview to centralise all monitoring, including performance monitoring using HP MeasureWare and Windows PerfMon.

• Extensive review, optimization and management of the organisation’s backup strategy (HP Data Protector) to enable greater reliability, throughput and resource planning capability.

• Utilise HPUX RP8400 and other RP class servers and SAN XP1024 Brocade, using HP CommandView and Raid Manger.

• Continued support and maintenance of Continental, Metro Clustering, HP Openview and HP Data Protector including ZDB integrating with Oracle's RMAN.

• Additional duties include being part of a 24/7 out of hours support rota.


Oct 2002 – May 2003: Viatel Communications Ltd.

• Installed and configured HP Openview Operations and Network Node Manager enhancing their capabilities of monitoring their European IP Network infrastructure and Nortel/Preside applications.

• Continued support of Viatel’s UNIX infrastructure - predominantly High-Availability systems running HP-UX with Oracle and management of a Netbackup solution, as well as supporting many new clients.

• HP hardware included D, K, L, N and RP class servers running on HP-UX 10.20 – 11i.

• Implemented higher levels of automation, and well structured procedures within the wider organisation to help reduce overheads and complexity.

• Trained several members of staff in UNIX and upgraded many HP-UX servers from 10.20 to 11i.


Nov 1999 – Sept 2002: Global Crossing Ltd.

• Joined the team of five as a UNIX administrator, having previous management experience from CSFB and UBS, quickly progressed into Team Leader.

• Role included primarily 1st Tier support of Hardware, System Administration of 250+ Global High Availability UNIX systems, Oracle database administration, Application support (Lucent, Nortel, Nortel Preside, Alcatel), change management and occasional service delivery management.

• Responsible for an Integrated Network Management System used World wide for fault management and global provisioning of all Global Crossing Worldwide services. Also responsible for all Element Management Systems used for interfacing with sub-sea and terrestrial telecommunications network elements. Disaster Recovery for all INMS and EMS Systems.

• Ensured the Unix team had documented methods and procedures along with standards required to be met by vendors when providing new systems.

• Twice managed the UNIX platform (200 + servers) during a Primary Data Centre power down.


May 1996 – Nov 1999: Union Bank of Switzerland


• Commenced working as a Shift Manager, managing a four man team, reporting directly to the Data Centre Manager.

• Role consisted of management and maintenance of several hundred UNIX, OpenVMS, AS400 and Tandem Servers.

• Responsibilities included the management of many Trading/Back office and on-line Applications including Swift, Nosto, Rolfe & Nolan, Atlas and MultiBatch.

• Additional duties included ensuring the teams training and career development needs were met


Feb 1991 – May 1996: Credit Suisse First Boston


• Joined the team as a Tandem Operator, having previous experience from the Royal Navy and quickly progressed into the 24/7 UNIX Shift Operations role, managing 100+ OpenVMS, UNIX and Tandem mainframes.

• Promoted to Operations Shift Manager reporting regularly to trading floor management, with the responsibility of managing a five-man shift, including training, appraisals and setting objectives.

• Responsibilities included the management of many Trading and Back office Applications including Swift, Crest, Nosto, Rolfe & Nolan, Atlas and MultiBatch.


Jan 1986 – Jan 1991: Royal Navy


• Joined Royal Navy and trained as a Communications engineer.

• Commenced working on Tandem mainframes, while based in Gibraltar.

• Worked on the NATO communications system with served all HM ships and communications centres Worldwide.
