Practical Experience
March 2006 Field Course in Matlock, Derbyshire.
Environmental Statement
During a week long field course a small group of us had to assess the area in order to find the most environmentally suitable location for a theoretical holiday park. This included finding the most appropriate sites for a pony trekking centre, golf course, accommodation, swimming pool, car parking and access to the site, for both the customers and also the commercial transport. Once we had decided on the site we then presented our information to a larger group as a group presentation. This was done in the style of proposing the idea to the inhabitants of the area, justifying our decisions and answering any questions posed. In addition to this we then had to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment on the site, and I then created an environmental statement for the site.
Contaminated Land
Whilst in Derbyshire we also conducted some on site soil analysis of an area known to have some contamination. We then used the information gathered to create a map of the area studied, showing the difference in contamination levels.
Other Practical Skills
Throughout my three year course I have completed many technical reports including laboratory reports and research projects. I have also created and given many presentations using both over head projectors and Microsoft power point. I have also carried out lots of laboratory work.
Skills
Leadership My leadership skills developed during my 11 years in guiding, where I was a young leader for the local Rainbow and Brownie packs.
Teamwork I have developed my confidence when working as part of a team, not only when participating in group projects etc, both in college and university, but also in my employment at the local pub. I also used these skills whilst being on the council for the Environmental Engineering Society.
Communication I have been the student staff committee council representative for my year group for all 3 years of my time at university. This meant I was responsible for voicing the concerns of my course mates to the council in order for the problems to be remedied.
Organisation As social secretary for the Environmental Engineering Society
2005-6, I was in charge of organising the social events for that year and also helped to organise the end of year ball which catered for around 100 people.
Responsibility In addition to the responsibility as a young leader in guiding, I was also the treasurer of the local Rangers pack.
