I was employed as an agency staff member in the Operations Support Group as a Support Instrument Engineer primarily involved in the commissioning/troubleshooting and management of instrumentation related to Assay of Nuclear Materials. During this time I have attended a neutron and a gamma measurement course at Liverpool University for which I achieved distinctions.

After starting as an Instrument Technician, I was promoted to E/I Engineer for papermaking in December 1991, responsible for all electrical and instrumentation in this area including:
maintenance strategies
budget control
spares management
project engineering
supervision of craftsmen
breakdown management
liaising with production on a daily basis
I was involved in various initiatives including problem solving, TQM and performance management. I was also a participant in various teams, set up to find solutions to problem areas. My role also included liaison and co-ordination of service engineers for both breakdown and routine. After a major re-structure in September 1997, I assumed the role of Project Engineer. During this period I managed a variety of projects from design and implementation of a preventive maintenance strategy/repair system to management of control system installation on PM4 dryers.
I accepted a redundancy package in Feb 99.

My responsibilities included instrument maintenance and fault diagnosis on the 'Honeywell' TDC 3000 and associated electronic field instrumentation.

Responsibilities included overhauling, calibration and commissioning variety of instrumentation on 'gasifiers' at the 'Sasol 3' petroleum plant (oil from coal). This was an intrinsically safe zone. I was invited to join 'Sasol Fertilizers' as a permanent employee.

Served apprenticeship and passed National Trade Test in industrial instrumentation and process control. Training varied from pneumatic instruments and control systems to electronic instrumentation, included computer and plc programming.

2 year mandatory national military service.
After a year of training I was stationed in the operational area on the Namibian (South West African) and Angolan border. I attained the rank of section leader.
