SELECTION OF PROJECT EXPERIENCE

2006 to present date - Development of an Asset Integrity Management System (AIMS). Project Manager.

This work, for the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), is developing an AIMS for all Assets types (e.g. pipelines, pressure equipment, storage tanks etc.). A pool of 12 of ESR Technology's Principal Engineers are producing guidelines and recommendations for a collection of Processes and supporting Procedures (e.g. Management of Change, Anomaly Tracking, Hand-over Process for New Projects, Supply Chain QA/QC, Risk-based Methodologies) used to manage the technical integrity and operational integrity of the Operators' Assets.

2005 & 2003 - Sand Management Manuals. This work, for two major oil and gas operators (Shell and Total), produced Manuals in support of the day-to-day management of the threats presented by produced sand on a number of offshore platform/FPSO-based production facilities, offshore Nigeria and offshore Angola. The associated sand management strategies are under-pinned by sand impact studies (erosion assessments and sand transport studies - carried out using AEA Technology's in-house software).

2004 - Guidance on Practice for Erosion Control (BP Engineering Technical Practices, GP 06-14). This work, for BP Sunbury produced comprehensive guidance, for use throughout the BP Group (including upstream and downstream activities), on controlling the erosion threats caused by solids contained in the produced fluids.

2003 -Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMS). Project Manager. This work, for Petronas, developed [in conjunction with JP Kenny and Datastream Systems (provider of the 'Pacer' computerised maintenance management software)] a fully integrated integrity management system for a very large portfolio of operational pipelines (offshore and onshore). The developed system comprises a Management System (integrity management policy, legislative requirements, roles and responsibilities etc.) and an Information Control System that interfaces with fitness-for-purpose assessment/analysis applications (e.g. DNV's RP F101, JP Kenny's PipeCalc).

2002 - Corrosion Management Training Course. This work, for BP Energy, developed, produced, and delivered a 1-day training course (at 3 separate venues) on Corrosion Management.

2001 to 2002 - Landline Integrity Authority. This work, for BP's Miller delivery unit, involved defining, implementing and reviewing integrity management activities for the 26″ Miller gas landline. Issues addressed included: cathodic protection (CP) system anomalies; thermally induced, permanent displacements; excavations to follow-up intelligent pig survey results; and production of a design, fabrication and installation (DFI) résumé for the pipeline.

1999 to 2001 - Pipeline System Integrity Authority. This work, for BP Amoco Exploration's Central Area Transmission System (CATS), involved performing the function of Integrity Authority (defining, implementing and reviewing integrity management activities) for the 36″ CATS onshore gas pipeline and it's 4 associated 6″ processed liquids export pipelines.

2000 - Pipeline Integrity Management System (PIMS). This work, for the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), involved advising on the setting-up of a PIMS for a very large portfolio of operational pipelines (offshore and onshore).

1999 & 2000 -Inspection work-scopes. This work, for BP Amoco Exploration's (SNS) business unit involved the production of inspection work-scopes for the topsides pipe-work and vessels on 2 offshore gas/condensate platforms using a risk-based inspection planning system.

1997, 1998 & 1999 -Pipeline Integrity Management System Audits. This work, for Talisman Energy (UK), involved independently verifying the 1996, 1997 and 1998 pipeline integrity management activities for all of the operator's operational North Sea pipelines in terms of adherence to the planned IMR activities and determination of pipeline technical integrity.

1997 -Pipelines Technical Integrity Review (pipelines hand-over). This work for BP Exploration's Southern North Sea (SNS) business unit involved liasing with all bodies (operator's staff, engineering contractors etc.) responsible for past, and present, integrity management activities in order to independently ascertain the technical integrity condition of a number of operational submarine pipelines which were handed-over from BHP to BP.

1997 -Pipeline Major Accident Prevention Documents (MAPD). This work involved managing/developing the production of Major Accident Prevention Documents (MAPDs) for Talisman Energy (UK) and Amoco.

1996 -Avoidance of Baseline Intelligent Pigging. Assisted Amoco, Norway in producing a technical argument/justification against the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate's (NPD) regulatory requirement to conduct a baseline survey, using an intelligent pig, of a new (to be constructed) submarine pipeline. The approach adopted was based on the use of a HAZOP to identify construction, installation and pre-commissioning deterioration and damage mechanisms and to identify measures to minimise these.

1995 -Development of research strategies and programmes. This work was conducted on behalf of the UK's offshore regulator, the Offshore Safety Division (OSD) of HSE in support of their continuing offshore safety R&D programme. Areas for future research were identified and detailed research programmes were developed. Examples of topic areas covered are: mechanical systems; safety systems; application of reliability centred maintenance and risk-based inspection to offshore installations; emergency shutdown (ESD) hardware and philosophy; and pipeline inspection techniques.

1991 -Intelligent pigging (internal inspection) of submarine pipelines. This work involved the management of a number of internal inspections of BP's offshore pipelines. The work involved the preparation of work-scopes, the assessment and award of contracts, the organisation/supervision of the field operations and the reporting of results.

1990 -External inspection of submarine pipelines. This work involved the management of the inspection operations associated with BP's portfolio of offshore pipelines. The inspection activities included vessel-based sonar (acoustic), remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and diver operations. The work involved the supervision of a team of 8 engineers together with the control of a budget of approximately £2M. Development of Statutory Inspection Schemes, Pipeline Integrity Management Systems (PIMS), and development and execution of detailed procedures in support of pipeline intervention projects.

1989 -Development of underwater inspection tools/techniques. This work involved the co-ordination and technical supervision of a variety of research and development projects, funded by BP, aimed at reducing the sub-sea inspection, maintenance and repair costs associated with offshore platform structures and pipelines. Responsible for the management of a team of 3 professional engineers and the control of a budget of £600K. Directed the successful technical development, and subsequent operational appraisal, of a number of innovative projects. The developed tools/techniques are now widely used offshore with the resultant reduction in operational costs.
