PhD Reliability Engineering (CASE Award sponsored by EPSRC and BAE Systems)

  • Doctorate focused on Mathematical Modelling of Reliability Engineering.
  • Liaising with BAE Systems Air Systems department to create a commercially applicable software tool capable of analysing Maintenance-Free Operating Periods (MFOPs), an MoD-backed reliability metric. Tool applied to Nimrod aircraft.
  • Skills involved: C++ programming, report writing, research of applicable reliability and modelling methods, practical problem-solving and focused communication between academic and industrial interests. Requires self-motivation, tactfulness, awareness of other research activity, focus and hard work.
  • Presentations made regularly to research group and industrial supervisors. Research presented at industry-recognised reliability and systems engineering conferences, and published in well-known reliability journal, Reliability Engineering and System Safety.
  • Full-time work finishes end of September 2007, thesis expected to be published 2008.

BEng Hons Mathematical Engineering - First Class with Honours

  • Awards gained for best degree performance in department and best performance on course.
  • Combines the analytical and logical aspects of maths with practical and design application skills involved in engineering. Final Year Project involved creation of a software tool to simulate and expand system Fault Trees and find system reliability figures.

Performed statistical analysis and employed Design of Experiments in order to bring a drilling process under control, and protect commercial interests of company. Worked with the Improvement Team and met with outside contacts to get as much information and progress as possible. Created two reports of findings and recommendations for the managers and directors, one of which was taken to the Turbine Engine company Pratt & Whitney in the USA.

Charged with running a session of 900 main University exam candidates. Duties involved: leading a team of 18 invigilators, setting out desk material, running and supervising exams, checking and reporting issues on candidates with inappropriate conduct or errors on papers, liaising with Exams Office.

Voluntary Youth Worker, Lee Abbey Youth Camp

For two weeks in August each year, working with a team of 50 young and enthusiastic leaders to run a Christian summer camp for 13-18 year olds. Responsibilities include: supervising cooks team, maintaining a safe camp site, running organised activity sessions, entertainment, pastoral support.
