Experience:

Over thirty years experience (of which 20 years have been as Head of large multi-disciplined engineering departments) in maintenance, project and design engineering management associated with mining, hydrocarbons, chemicals, gas plant, steam &, materials handling, PLC controlled process plant, energy management, overseas oil, gas & petrochemical projects.

2006 - present Engineering Manager - Worley Parsons - Kazakhstan

Responsible for the engineering management of the company's operation in Almaty Kazakhstan. This involves managing the six principal engineering disciplines engaged on the engineering design and bids for various process plants with included hydro-carbons, gas utilisation, oil/gas separation, floating glass plant, pipelines, refinery revamp/extension, iron ore mine expansion.

As it is a new office I was involved with recruitment, staff organisation, and the introduction of management systems to augment the new office.

Responsibilities:

  • The direction, control, monitoring, supervision and co-ordination of the Engineering in accordance with the contract, statutory requirements and applicable engineering standards ensuring a consistent design philosophy and standards by the engineering disciplines in accordance with "Good Engineering Practice"
  • Promote effective communication within the Engineering discipline sections and ensure they are adequately staffed with appropriately qualified personnel.
  • Set standards and ensure a common approach to Engineering work.
  • Ensure design reviews are carried out in accordance with the approved Engineering and Project procedures.
  • Contribute to the development of the project plans, schedules and estimates.
  • Where appropriate, spearhead initiatives aimed at developing an innovative and cost saving approach to Engineering work.
  • Review and agree all CTR's and estimates produced by lead discipline engineers.
  • Review of all job progress and cost reports.
  • Ensure that all Engineering work is managed and executed in accordance with the agreed budget and plan.
  • Ensure that all design changes are captured by the change control process.
  • To act as the focal point for specialist engineering such as - HVAC, Metallurgy, Specialist analysis, Accessing pipeline expertise required on specific scopes, External specialist consultants under sub-contracting arrangements.
  • Project manage some scopes of work as required

2005 - 06 Contract lecturer at various colleges in higher education sector. Also during this period I took time out of engineering management to renovate my 19 th century house and renovated joint owned apartments in Krakow

2002-04 Senior Engineer- KSF Kuwait

Responsible for managing a multi-national, multi-disciplined team of engineers engaged on the design, specification and construction and procurement of various projects for oil and gas production and infra-structure facilities for Kuwait Oil Company. Typical projects were for the revamp/upgrade of upstream oil production and handling facilities, oil pipelines, tank farms, pumping stations, gas compressors

(note - Senior Engineer is the highest grade an expat can attain in Kuwait. Outside Kuwait it would be titled Project/Engineering Manager)

1999-02 Principal Lecturer-Darlington College of Technology

Lecturer to OND, HNC, HND students in mechanical engineering, mathematics, engineering science and. engineering design. Course leader for HNC and HND Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics

1997-99. Project Manager- Babcock King-Wilkinson

Responsible for managing multi disciplined team of engineers and support staff engaged on the design, specification, procurement, and construction of two oil gathering and separation plants for the Yemen Oil Company. Design office team of up-to 45 and site construction supervisory team of 14 personnel.

1995-97. Senior Engineer- Kuwait Oil Company

Responsible for managing multi disciplined, multi-national team of engineers engaged on the design, specification, costing, construction, and commissioning of various projects associated with oil and gas production services. Managing and negotiating with engineering contractors and PMC. Typical projects included pipelines, pump and compressor installations, storage tanks, and oil/gas separation plants.

1992-95. Engineering Manager - John Brown Engineering

Responsible for managing multi disciplined team of engineers engaged on design, construction and installation of tank farms, pumping installations, field generating sets for a 240km multi-product pipeline from Lam Chabang to Bangkok for Thai Petroleum Ltd, Thailand.

Representing Company at meetings with client.

1989-92. Company Engineering Manager - Blockleys Brick Ltd, Telford

Responsible for the complete engineering function for the Company's four brick manufacturing factories producing 60m bricks per year. Responsibilities included capital projects, design and development, maintenance, capital and revenue budgets, stores & procurement, site health, safety and training. Responsible for the project management and design, construction and commissioning of two new brick factories incorporating latest state of the art technology.

1985-89. Works Engineering Manager- Coal Products Ltd, Aberaman Briquetting Works, South Wales

Head of Works engineering department comprising 240 personnel plus 50 contractors incorporating both maintenance and project engineering sections complete with design office. Responsible for all site maintenance, services, projects, development and budgets.

The Works had two separate plants:

Phurnacite Plant processing 750000 tonnes of coal per year to produce smokeless fuel, gas and coal by-products, and Ancit Plant processing 90000 tonnes of coal per year by a reactor process to produce smokeless fuel and gas. Total revenue budget £6.5M pa.

1982-85 Works Engineering Manager- Coal Products Ltd, Cwm Coking & Chemical Works, South Wales

Head of Works engineering department comprising 120 personnel engaged on maintenance, installation and development of plant and a site 2 x 8MW power station with 44 personnel. Responsible for all site maintenance, services, projects, and budgets.

During 1983/85 part of the Works was rebuilt at a cost of £18M to include new coke ovens and by-products plant processing 500000 tonnes of coal per year producing metallurgical coke, gas, tar, benzole, napthalene and sulphate of ammonia

1979 - 1982 Deputy Works Engineer Coal Products Aberaman Briquetting Works

Responsible for planning the work load for a 240 strong multi-disciplined engineering department engaged on installation, maintenance and development of carbonisation, smokeless fuel, gas and chemical plant. Managed site contractors and was in charge of the site planned preventative maintenance system. Deputising for Works Engineering Manager in his absence

1975-79. Project Engineer- Coal Products Ltd, Northern Group, Co Durham

Responsible to Group Project Manager for the design, specification, costing, construction and commissioning of a range of projects for eight coke and chemical works within the region. It involved managing and negotiating with contractors.

1972-75. Deputy Works Engineer, Coal Products Ltd, Monkton Coke Works, Tyne & Wear

Responsible for planning and implementing engineering workload for multi-craft workforce engaged on maintenance and installation of coal and coke handling plant, chemical plant, gas handling and steam raising. In charge of the operation of a planned maintenance system. Deputising for the Works Engineering Manager in his absence. The works produced metallurgical coke, tar, benzol, naptha, sulphate of ammonia and gas.

1970-72. Assistant Mechanical Engineer, British Coal, Wearmouth Colliery, Sunderland

Responsible to Colliery Engineer for supervision of mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation of mining machinery within a section of the mine.

1966-70 British Coal

Engineering apprenticeship and colliery fitter at collieries in the Northumberland and Durham coal fields
