Aircraft Dynamics/Aircraft Performance Trials Officer

MoD Boscombe Down, Wilts, SP4 0JF

QinetiQ iX System Evaluation Services (SES) provides independent advice and recommendations to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) for Military Aircraft Release to Service (RTS). Having joined the QinetiQ Graduate Development Programme, I spent 3 years broadening my horizons within specialised areas at Boscombe Down. These included:

➢ Aircraft Dynamics

➢ Project Management

➢ Safety Assurance

➢ Design

Having chosen to specialise as an Aircraft Dynamics/Aircraft Performance (ADAP) Trials Officer, I am responsible for the safe and effective conduct of specific test and evaluation tasks. This role consists of defining the analytical approach to aircraft trials, producing Trials Instructions and Test Briefs, performing data acquisition and analysis, and authoring and compiling technical customer reports. Specific details of my responsibilities are detailed below.

Nimrod MRA4 Aircraft Dynamics January 05 - Present Subject Matter Expert for the qualification of the Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) working within a Joint Test Team with BAE Systems in Warton, Lancashire. As the Nimrod MRA4 is currently within its design and development stage, the key areas of responsibility include providing technical advice for the RTS, the assessment of the aircraft's safety, fitness for purpose and specification compliance during the qualification and certification of the AFCS. The task involves working closely with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) customer providing technical advice when appropriate. Additional responsibilities include monitoring aircraft limitations and flight envelopes during simulator tests and the analysis of simulated and flight test data required for qualification purposes. Further duties in addition to the main role include the analysis of flight test data of handling qualities assessments requiring knowledge of stability and performance test techniques.

Hercules Aircraft Dynamics February 04 - December 04 Lead Trials Officer and Technical Manager for the Hercules C-130J Static Centre of Gravity (CG) Extensions Trials to provide Military Aircraft Release recommendations to the MoD for increasing the flight envelope during the deployment of containers in support of airdrop operations. The position involved coordinating a large trials team within the Aircraft Dynamics discipline and the Airborne Forces Project Team as well as the aircrew. Responsibilities included monitoring the CG configuration of the aircraft during each sortie to ensure that all test points remained valid and safe and to ensure trial progression. The task concluded in the production of the complex customer report, which was successfully delivered within the demanding contract schedule.

An insight to Project Management within Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) /Successor Identify Friend or Foe (SIFF).

Hercules C130J Aircraft Dynamics August 02 - October 03

Lead AD/AP Trials Officer in support of a parachute freefall system performance trial, responsible for providing handling qualities assessment at airdrop speed with the cargo ramp and door open at 25000ft.

Design Office April 02 - August 02

An insight into the Design Office which is responsible for the design of aircraft modifications and instrumentation installations. The 3 areas of focused upon were the Drawing Office, Design Assurance and Stress Office.

Engineering Directorate Training February 02 - April 02

An introductory role within QinetiQ Engineering Directorate providing a first hand experience of the engineering and support facilities in support of the military Test and Evaluation program.

Harrier Safety Assurance September 01 - February 02

An appreciation of Safety Assurance including reviewing and amending external documents for the eventual inclusion within a safety case and producing Service Deviation advice in support of the RTS.
