Employment

MWH Global - Wastewater networks technician

09/05 - present

  • During my first months of employment I had to use an A3 drawing board to produce longitudinal sections as a CAD machine was not available.
  • I currently use AutoCAD to produce 2D technical drawings (general arrangement drawings, plans and sections etc) of storm water storage shafts, pumping stations, rising mains, combined sewer overflow chambers (usually with some screening mechanism), longitudinal section and general sewerage layout plans. Some of my most recent project experience includes:
  • Assisting a senior civil engineer in producing various designs for a £14m scheme, based in Sheffield. The scheme centres around diverting flows from three treatment works into one.
  • Job secondment to Sheffield, this involved holiday cover for the senior CAD technician working on the above £14m scheme with mechanical, electrical, structural and civil staff.
  • Various site visits with structural engineer to check on bridge reinforcement and to assess the impact of placing gabion baskets or a retaining wall to prevent the collapse of a raised track.
  • During my time at MWH Global I have completed many different training courses some of these include:
  • Pipeline design
  • Introduction to hydraulic design
  • Site environmental awareness training.
  • CDM changes 2007
  • Several undergraduate presentations
  • I am currently the office champion for the internet based knowledge centre (Knet) and help solve a range of problems people encounter with the system. To maintain a good knowledge of the system I attended regular meetings with champions from other offices within the UK via the phone to discuss problems and ways to improve the system.

Neil Wilson - Building contractor

2003 - 2004

Position - Labourer

This job involved lots of hard physical labour and helped me develop individual skills as well as helping me work as part of a team. The main projects I worked on were the construction of swimming pools and pool houses; this was my first real exposure to a site environment. During my time on site I was involved in:-

  • Laying reinforced concrete bases and walls for a cellar
  • Excavation of the foundations for a pool house and cellar
  • Assisting in laying of block work for a cellar and pool house
  • Mixing of cement and concrete
  • General site maintenance i.e. keeping the site tidy to avoid trip hazards.

Personal statement

Over the past two years I have improved my design skills from that of a complete beginner to having the ability to quickly produce 2D designs to the correct client specifications. I am quite comfortable in my AutoCAD 2D design abilities and would be very willing to learn some 3D skills.

I have recently started part time study for a HND in civil engineering at Leeds Metropolitan University; I find the course extremely interesting especially the topics based around structures and structural engineering. I have full confidence in my ability to achieve the HND and will hopefully have the opportunity to obtain a degree, then masters in my chosen topic.

I am currently on a training agreement with the I.C.E. with aspirations to become a charted engineer. I complete regular quarterly reports/presentations and keep a regular CPD record.

During my time within the wastewater industry I have assisted several design teams; this has helped me to develop good team working and communication skills.
