Responsible for legislative (UK and Global) compliance, applying best practice standards, auditing and reviewing the development of systems and procedures relating to HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) for Foster Wheeler Energy's Process and Engineering Groups and interfacing with the Construction group. 2000 - 2002BASF plc, Seal Sands, Middlesbrough

Process Safety Advisor and COMAH (Control of Manager Accident Hazards) Technical Manager

The job scope was to co-ordinate, advise and develop methods for reviewing process safety, ensure existing plant operated safely and to ensure safe design of new plant.

Developed a methodology for conducting safety reviews suitable for the 300 acre BASF site. Supported the safety management system for the triennial plant shut down under the CDM Regulations.

Appointed as COMAH Technical Manager for BASF top tier COMAH (high hazard) site. Managed a team of 7 Senior Engineers and co-ordinated the writing of the COMAH report.

Provided technical advice into plant change (engineering) requests. Advised on process safety issues for new facilities.

Participated and led incident investigation teams, establishing root causes of serious incidents.

Safety advisor for the site Emergency Support Team, developed emergency support procedures. Received Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) refresher training and Chemical Protection Suit (CPS) training.

1998 - 2000Smith & Nephew Medical Limited, Hull

Critical Process Engineering Manager and Maintenance Manager

Duties included operational, process engineering and maintenance responsibility for two (highly flammable) solvent recovery plants, three adhesive processing plants, and all other processes which were safety critical on site.

Developed and managed the Critical Process Team, consisting of three multi-skilled craftsmen, a senior instrument and control engineer, and two electricians. For all critical processes, Shahana ensured that health and safety procedures were adhered to as well as emission compliance. Managed group budget including procurement.

Review of permit to work system for site; risk assessment, hot work, hazardous area and confined space.

Conducted Basis of Safety reviews for safety critical plant. Responsible for checking site safety systems and took necessary remedial action when required.

Assessed emergency procedures for critical plant areas. Investigated all serious (safety critical) incidents on site. Received Fire training from Humberside Fire Brigade including use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and confined space rescue.

Set up preventative maintenance procedures and trip testing for both recovery plants and all safety critical areas on site. Authorised the re-setting the most safety critical devices (such as emergency shutdown systems) on site. Safety engineering and maintenance advisor for all new site projects.

Authoriser for risk assessments and permits. Reviewed method statements for all safety critical plant areas.

1997 - 1998Courtaulds Fibres Limited, Grimsby

Process Development/Design/Commissioning Engineer

Worked on process development, plant design and commissioning of a new process to ensure minimal technical risk. Responsibilities included being involved in HAZOPs and hazard reviews (representing operations-technical advisor) for the new plant. Worked on the commissioning of this ($150M) Tencel plant which involved novel technology. This led onto start-up and plant support during the initial production phase.

1996 - 1997Courtaulds Fibres Inc.

Seconded to Mobil, Alabama USA

Technical Support Engineer

Provided technical support for the Mobil Tencel plant. Designed and conducted trials to minimise waste production, resulted in cost savings of $300K per year. Conducted development work on the feasibility of a new inhibitor process

Became design engineer for this project. The ($300K) design was also fully HAZOP'd and was successfully approved and installed.

1995 - 1996Courtaulds, Coventry UK

Development Engineer

Involved in process and plant development. Scope of work included investigating the technical and financial feasibility of new concepts and to reduce capital and operating costs of current and future Tencel production plants. Also involved in several HAZOPs for the new Tencel plant.

1994Esso UK plc

Summer vacation work at Fawley Petroleum Refinery. Assessment into tank availability in offsites for fuel oil storage.
