I feel that I have good commercial awareness and communication skills.

EMPLOYMENT

Laing O'Rourke: Engineer, April 2003 - Present

Playfair Project, Edinburgh

I started with Laing O'Rourke as a sponsored student through my last year of university. I worked as an assistant engineer for work experience after completing my third year of university at Playfair Project in Edinburgh. At this job my duties included; helping the senior engineer with setting-out, taking concrete cubes and keeping an up-to-date QA filing system for the concrete testing. I also measured and ordered the concrete for most pours that were being carried out on site.

Cala Homes, Glasgow Harbour

After graduating from university I carried out a six week placement on site learning about health and safety. After completing this I then moved into a managerial role on site looking after the main courtyard area of the building. This included carrying out the last of the setting-out for the building and also ordering plant and material to carry out the remainder of the works.

Xscape, Renfrew

On this job I worked as the main site engineer for the externals work package. This included the setting-out and levelling the entire car park which included kerbs, road levels, tar levels and also the positioning and levelling of drainage into the car park soak-away areas. I was also involved in the organisation of the externals works package from lay-down areas to organising the externals work force.

After moving to another project which then completed, I came back to this job to deal with the surveying of all the cinema auditoria ceilings before remedial works were carried out. I then plotted this information into AutoCAD drawings before passing this on to the structural engineer. On this site I also completed the management section of my Graduate Management Programme.

EMPLOYMENT (CONT)

Quartermile, Edinburgh

This project involved the refurbishment of two hospital buildings in the city centre. I worked along side the architect for the project to establish the main gridline control points for the two buildings that were to be used through to project completion. I then carried out the main setting out works for the build. I was also involved in the onsite management of four different sub-contractors. In addition to my day-to-day duties I also worked through a placement in the commercial department to help me complete my Graduate Management Programme.

141 Bothwell Street, Glasgow

This project involved the construction of a ten storey commercial development in Glasgow City Centre. My role on this job was that of a resident engineer. My main duties involved establishing the site settling out control points, checking all sub-contractor setting out on site as well as auditing QA files for all of the engineering aspects of the job. My role also involved coordinating work on site, organising day-to-day deliveries and establishing a site traffic management plan.

Graduate Management Programme

I have now completed the Laing O'Rourke Graduate Management Programme. This lasted for two and a half years and was designed to cover all aspects of the construction industry from planning to quantity surveying. Through this I completed six management modules which included managing communications, managing finance and innovation and learning. This helped develop me as a member of a team on a construction site in both engineering and managerial roles.
