Environmental Management

My current work comprises:-

  • Ensuring SHE legal compliance / ISO14001 requirements throughout the company's northern operations.
  • Regular SHE meetings with all operational teams at contract site / regional offices.
  • Regular contact with client's management, SHE and environmental advisors.
  • Monthly participation in Senior Manager's Meeting.
  • Conducting general /specific environmental inductions
  • Pro-active contact with the Environment Agency, English Nature, Local Council's Ecologists, other agencies
  • Preparation and issue to pertinent personnel, specific contract environmental, waste management and emergency plans, risk assessments, briefings, tool-box talks.
  • Conducting environmental inspections, audits, management of Corrective Action Requests.
  • Aspect/Impact identification, evaluation, and setting mitigation controls.
  • Reviews of the Company Environmental Policy Statement - annual or earlier if deemed appropriate.
  • Compilation/updating of environmental legislation register / other requirements to which the company subscribes.
  • Conducting performance reviews.
  • Reviewing./updating as necessary all EMS documents.

Earlier SHE Management experience with:-

MFI-Hygena's two factories at Hull, maintaining improvements with the company's ISO 14001 management. Inspections, audits, waste reduction /re-use of / for factory heating fuel, KPI's on a range of operational environmental, and health and safety controls. Maintained their programme, improved their KPI performance, and "did well" in a two internal audits from Head Office.

Whilst with MFI/Hygena, I headed the Company's defence against possible HSE prosecution following a RIDDOR accident. The visiting Senior HSE Inspector, accompanied by a new Graduate Trainee, decided against prosecution, and commended me for my management of the situation. I have since been contacted by MFI offering me further work.

Rentokil Initial CCTV security systems for BNFL and London 'Congestion Charging' - Installation of environmental management system to meet ISO 14001. Site inspections, audits, briefings, KPI's. Maintained their progress to certification.

Shipley Europe-part of global Rohm and Haas chemical organisation -chemical manufacturing operations - a Lower Tier COMAH site. I played leading role:-

Obtaining ISO 14001 certification by modifying their "QMS/EMS" manual to pure EMS in time for their

certification audit.

Developing an improvement strategy for waste reduction/ recovery/ recycling, consented discharges to

watercourses and air emissions.

Improving their KPI's on a range of operational SHE management controls. Maintained the company's

improvement in SHE performance.

Risk Management Support - Health and Safety support/ site inspections/audits to various construction trade companies. Developed environmental Tool-box talks/and environmental risk assessments attached to work method

statements.

Hunts Engineering (crankshaft manufacturer) - Conducted their Preliminary Environmental Review to start the company's move towards ISO14001 certification. This was also my Project for my EEF Certificate in Environmental Management.

In Chemical Operations-

Twenty years health, safety and environmental management in chemical operations management

- high-risk batch /continuous process operations which would now be under COMAH/IPPC controls.

- Discharge monitoring for liquids and gases.

Plant inductions / process training, Hazop / Hazan, accident/incident prevention training. SHE management

integrating all the various requirements for a safe working environment. Had an

accident/incident free record.

RPE, PPE, Emergency shutdown procedures, Confined Space management.

Process Utility management

Effluent management, fat / water / solids separators, pH and B.O.D. control. Waste oil / gas incinerators for

hydrogen, methylamines, odour management. Chemical waste management / disposal.

Tank farm management. Tanker loading / discharge - open, and enclosed with vapour pressure balance.

Other Health and Safety experience:-

Construction health and safety - CDM. Major CCTV installations at government offices and other

installations.

Demolition site management, machine-shops, warehousing, material movements, traffic segregation.

COSHH, elevated working, fall protection, manual handling and alternative mechanical aids.

Excavations, tradesmen's certification to use heavy equipment - mechanical diggers, tractors etc. Mechanical

equipment certification, safe use of electricity. PAT testing. Young persons on site.

Correct use of mobile towers, scaffolding, ladders / stepladders. Fall restraints/edge protection.

Manual handling

Welfare arrangements, First Aid provisions/record book.

Office Health and Safety - safe access/egress.

Lighting. Electrical overloading of wall sockets through miss-use of multi-sockets.

DSE risk assessments.

General - Writing Heath and Safety Policies, updating company H & S management documents.

Food manufacture: -

Risk assessments for all factory, office, warehouse, laundry, maintenance workshops, and conveyer systems.

RPE- guards/ interlocks, rotary machines, hydraulic presses, rotary ovens / conveyers, mechanical drives,

high-speed conveyers, manual handling,

permits to work, tray cleaning, laundry, COSHH for a range of cleaning chemicals, risk assessments of night

cleaning team / inter-relationship with maintenance.Noise assessments.

Warehouse health and safety. FLT's, traffic segregation, vehicle loading / unloading

Engineering workshop lathes, presses, hydraulic systems, stores area, air compressors, hot water generators,

Ammonia chilling system. Bench-top tidiness, gas cylinder / equipment storage.

Jan.03- Present Daniel Contractors Limited, Warrington. Utilities/Civil Engineering Contractor

Aug '06 to present - SHE Manager North, responsible for all SHE requirements on major cross country

and urban pipeline installations and repairs as a main contractor to United Utilities. Also all SHE requirements at

various offices, maintenance workshops, contract offices and site cabins.

To August 2006 - Environmental Officer for whole company, operating in Cumbria, Lancs, Cheshire, North Wales.

· Achieved two separate ISO 14001 certifications for different parts of the organisation.

July- Interim SHE Advisor, MFI Hygena Components, Hull. Contract appointment. ISO 14001

Dec 02 accredited. Averted HSE prosecution after RIDDOR accident.

Sept 01- Interim SHE Manager, Initial Electronic Security Systems Ltd, Blackburn.

March 02 Contract position moving towards ISO 14001accreditation.

March- April 01 Contract Risk Assessor - Canadian Pizza, Deeside, short contract.

Surveyed whole manufacturing, engineering, QC, and offices.

July 99-Mar 00 Interim SHE Advisor, Rohm and Haas, Chemicals manufacture (Principal People interim

appointment). Continuing their SHE management improvements and gaining their

ISO14001certification. Maintained compliance plus usual H&S issues. Batch chemical

processing, operations/warehousing.

May-June 99 Contract Risk Assessor - Canadian Pizza, Salford. As above, but different location.

Sept 99- SHE Advisor, Risk Management Support Ltd, Northwich. Inspection, audits of construction

Mar 00 / service companies.

May-June 99 Environmental Auditor, Hunts Engineering (Crankshafts) Ltd., Eccles. Lead their Preliminary

Environmental Review for ISO14001.

Earlier - Responsible for a wide range of SHE management requirements in the chemical industry
