Responsible for the structural design to proposed client accommodation for Lloyd Brothers (Scotland) Ltd near Pallet Hill, Penrith. Project includes a reinforced concrete basement with two-storey steelwork structure. Architects were Stephen Crichton Chartered Architect Ltd of Carlisle. Contract price circa £1.2m.
Highland Drove Inn
Responsible for the structural design and refurbishment of business property in Great Salkeld, Cumbria. Project included the assessment of existing masonry walls and design of structures to allow extension of property. Architects were Stephen Crichton Chartered Architect Ltd of Carlisle. Contract price circa £0.5m.
Magnox Electric Ltd
Retained as the Planning Supervisor for the Demolition of the Cooling Towers at the Chapelcross Nuclear Site near Annan. Responsible for the safe co ordination of the design function associated with the demolition of the Reinforced Concrete Cooling Towers

Retained by Anchor Staying Put to provide engineering advice on a range of domestic properties. Responsible for inspections of defects and specification of remedial works.
Domestic Sector
Projects range from raft slab type foundations to structural design of roof structures. Also involved with providing contractual advice to domestic clients undertaking refurbishment works after the flooding of January 2005 in Carlisle.

Employed as The Project Engineer for a national group of Consulting Engineers. Duties include the preparation and supervision of structural calculations and drawings for work in both the Commercial and Nuclear Sectors. Commercial projects I have been responsible for include:
· Structural design of an extension to an existing restaurant at Irton Hall, Cumbria. The structure consisted of a structural steelwork skeletal frame supported on a reinforced concrete slab on a system of cast insitu bored pile foundations. The structure was analysed elastically using the Staadpro suite and A3 sketch drawings produced by hand. Responsible for communications within the design team of Architect, Quantity Surveyor and client. The workload was organised using Microsoft Project.
· Structural design of a lift shaft at Morton Community Centre, Carlisle. The structure consisted of a reinforced blockwork lift pit with load bearing blockwork walls supporting the lift mechanism. The structure was analysed using simple hand techniques and drawings produced using Autocad
· Structural Inspection of various commercial and residential properties.
· Structural design of an extension to Mirehouse Community Centre in Whitehaven. The structure consisted of a structural steelwork skeletal frame supported on reinforced concrete pad foundations. The structure was analysed and designed using the portal frame design package by Fastrak. The drawings were produced using Autocad. Responsible for communications within the design team of Architect, Quantity Surveyor and client.
Projects in the nuclear sector that I have been responsible for include:
· Seismic strengthening of brickwork panels to an existing plant room on the Sellafield Site. The plant room housed essential monitoring equipment to control the waste in an overspill vessel from the Thorp process. Duties include the determination of the seismic load effects under a three dimensional loading system, analysis and design to current standards. Responsible for planning the workload using Microsoft Project and keeping the client informed of alterations to the plan
· Seismic strengthening of a steelwork support frame to a nitric acid tank. The acid tank was essential to the maintenance of the B30 process building within Sellafield. Again duties included the determination of the seismic load effects under a three dimensional loading system, analysis and design to current standards
· Various building survey reports to nuclear significant buildings within the Sellafield Site.
I was responsible for acquiring and maintaining the client relationship between DGP International and both Carlisle City Councils Planning Services Department and their Department of Technical Services.

Employed as a Senior Engineer for group of International Consulting Engineers. Responsible for the commercial and project management of various schemes in the Cockermouth office. I was responsible for the structural assessment of both highway and railway bridges on the Sellafield Nuclear Site in Cumbria. The scheme was part of the continuing operational safety assessment of the plant and had to be completed to a strict timetable dictated by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate.
I was also responsible for the commercial management of projects in the domestic sector. These projects, while small were generally of an emergency nature and required a thorough understanding of how structures perform.

Employed as a Principal Engineer for De Leuw Rothwell. I was responsible for the management of commercial and business issues in the Workington office. My responsibilities included ensuring all projects were completed on time and within budget. I was responsible for the maintenance of an annual fee income in excess of £200k.
I was also responsible for the project management of all civil and structural engineering projects undertaken by the office. Our major client was British Nuclear Fuels Limited at Sellafield, Cumbria. Projects I was involved with varied from topographical surveys through construction drawings for over buildings to investigative works in relation to accidents in nuclear sensitive structures.

Employed as a Bridge Engineer for Cumbria County Councils Construction Services Department. I was responsible for the assessment of both trunk and county road bridges. These structures varied from masonry arches, through reinforced concrete slabs to steel and timber decked structures. All structures were assessed in accordance with the Department of Transports Technical Directives BA 16/93, BD 21/94, BD 44/90 and the British Standard (BS) 5400 : part 3. My responsibilities include the structural assessment of the bridges and the completion of the assessment report. I have experience in writing structural inspection reports and recommendation of remedial actions and repairs. These duties had to be undertaken in accordance with Cumbria County Councils Quality Assurance Scheme.
I have experience in the preparation of contract documentation and drawings for both new schemes and maintenance schemes. The documents were drawn up in accordance with Cumbria County Councils Minor Works Specification and their Quality Assurance Scheme.
I also have experience in the repair of a steel/concrete composite bridge. The structure suffered vehicular impact damage to 3 No universal beams. Half of the structure had to be demolished and rebuilt. The structure was designed and detailed in accordance with BS 5400 : parts 3, 4 and 5. I was responsible for the design and check of all structural elements and completion of the construction drawings. I prepared contract documents in accordance with the Method of Measurement for Highway Works as published by HMSO
I have also been involved in the stabilisation of Lanercost Old Bridge, near Brampton. The bridge is a two span masonry arch structure crossing the River Irthing. The north abutment suffered differential settlement, creating a large diagonal crack to the northern arch intrados. The structure is a historical monument and as such, I was responsible for negotiations with English Heritage regarding the acceptability of strengthening proposals.
I am proficient in the use of the LEAP5 suite of analysis programs. I have developed a spreadsheet application for the management of the analysis results output. I am also proficient in the use of the AUTOCAD drafting package. I have some slight knowledge of the MOSS suite of programs for road alignment.
During my time with Cumbria County Council I gained valuable experience in the management of both my own and junior staff time and resources. I was responsible for setting targets for junior staff and ensuring compliance.
