Skills/Abilities

As an indentured apprentice I was taught the skills needed to become a competent craftsman in a multi-disciplined environment. These skills have been honed and augmented throughout the remainder of my work career.

More recent experience has been as a project manager, managing projects of around £500,000, where the main skills centre on getting the best from other people to ensure the projects are delivered to specification, within cost and on time.

I am computer literate with experience in using: Microsoft office, including word, excel, power point, Money, project, access and outlook; Artemis 6000 and 2000; Openplan ; and others.

After taking early retirement, I ran my own property maintenance business in Cornwall where the ability to manage work, prioritise tasks and deliver to the customers satisfaction were essential to business survival.

On moving to Lincolnshire I took up a post with The Electrical Contractors Association in Mansfield as a Contract Technical Assessor.

I am currently working as a part time lecturer in electrical engineering at the local College.

Trained with and worked for the Electrical Contractors Association as a technical assessor, assessing the competence of applicant companies to become members of the association and/or gain competent status in respect of part P of the building regulations.

Self Employed

After taking early retirement from National Air Traffic Services I developed my own property maintenance business with basic workshop facilities. Worked as a sub-contractor for SWEB. Most trade work undertaken with the exception of brickwork and plastering.

Civil Aviation Authority - (National Air Traffic Services) (NATS) - Infrastructure, Spectrum House Gatwick

Project Manager

My first project was to provide low level radio communication to helicopters servicing the platforms and rigs in the central North Sea where National Air Traffic Systems was working as sub contractor to the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association who had been formed to implement the directives of the Cullen report into the Piper Alpha disaster.

I then went on to manage projects to provide new Radio towers at several of the sites owned and operated by NATS.

Project Managed the Logistics element of the across NATS implementation of the SAP system.

Several civil works projects

Deputy Project Manager

Assisted the project manager on a large Radar infrastructure project to add time stamping to the plot data and improve the data transmission speed. This was required to enable the use of multitracking of targets. Managing the sub project to design and produce the equipment required to time stamp the data at the individual radar stations. Deputise for the project manager in his absence.

Senior Project Planning Engineer

Provided a project planning and monitoring service to several project managers responsible for the delivery of their individual projects on time, to cost and to specification. These projects covered civil works, Radar, Radio communications, telecommunications and work station design and construction.

Project Monitoring System Manager

Employed to construct a top level network based management system for the Trident project to provide a monthly overview of the project which by its very size had to be broken down into many different areas of responsibilities including: ship build of the submarines; civil works; nuclear programme; logistic support and finance for the Trident project. My task was to bring all these areas into an interlinked and easily understood programme for presentation to senior management and Parliament. I had a team of six contract staff and three in house staff working for me during the construction of the system The Trident project was one of the largest projects ever undertaken by the Ministry of Defence at that time and was valued by the treasury at £10.7bn.

1973-1985

Royal Naval Armament Depot Gosport

Production Foreman

Responsible for the overall production of guided missiles from the planning phase, through mechanical assembly, including warheads and propulsion systems and electrical testing of guidance and fuzeing systems.

Workshop Supervisor

Supervisor on guided weapons testing and maintenance of their associated test equipments.

Production planner.

Ensuring sufficient stocks of the different variants of the missile were available to meet Naval sailing programmes and exercises. Ensuring the correct equipment was available for missile assembly in workshops having regard for their Mod state and sufficient life for each deployment.

1965-1973

Royal Aircraft Establishment Bedford.(MOA)

Electrical fitter

Maintaining and operating the control systems of a large wind tunnel. and its associated infrastructure. (Power consumption on full load approximately 100 Mega Watts) Most of the work in this particular tunnel was in support of the Concord project with particular reference to the intake ramps and exhaust parts of the engine nacelles.

Indentured Electrical Apprentice

During this period as an Indentured Apprentice Electrical fitter a broad experience was gained in all aspects of engineering including: basic workshop practices; bench fitting; metal machining; basic electrical practice; draughtsmanship plant services electrical; heavy electrical plant; light current; generating station; electrical installation and coil winding.
