Employment History:
Commercial Manager. MetalTech (1997) Ltd. August 2005 - present.
I joined the business at the invitation of my friend, who founded the company to establish good management practices. This included revamping and streamlining the quality management system and establishing good health and safety practices. I have also established administration systems within the office to ensure good management reporting and audit practices. I also have responsibility for all manufacturing engineering and CAD drawings. Whilst at MetalTech, I have honed my CAD draughting skills, which has been supported by my recent completion of a level 3 City & Guilds in AutoCAD 2D. I undertake site surveys and draw up proposals and detailed manufacturing drawings for all architectural fabrications undertaken by the company, which can include structural steel fabrications, architectural canopies, balustrades, shop fronts, fire screen systems, and architectural aluminium cladding systems and smaller sheet metal assemblies and details. I also prepare all detail drawings for sub contract suppliers for laser profiles and machined parts. As MetalTech is a small company, my roles are wide and varied, covering all aspects of running a small successful business and I deputise for the managing director in his absence.
Estimating & Production
Control Manager Rochdale Metal Units Ltd. Sept 2004 - August 2005.
I had responsibility for estimating all sheet metal subcontract work, production planning and scheduling, purchasing and scheduling of raw materials, hardware and sub contract vendors.
- I fully integrated the FabriTRAK MRPII/ERP system, including, bills of materials, and route/process planning. I created recording systems where non previously existed for PPAP/FAIR, engineering change control and scrap and rejections
Operations Manager Crosslee Plc - V & P Engineering Co. Ltd. Aug 2002 - Sept 2004.
As operations manager I had full profit & loss responsibilities for the business and I was directly responsible to the plc board for all sales and commercial activities for Crosslee's Brighouse based subsidiary tool making and precision engineering company. I left the company when Crosslee plc transferred the assets of the company to a new owner.
ˇ I added 30% to sales turnover from new customers in my first year.
ˇ I reduced direct wage costs by 20%.
ˇ I expanded the client base into new industrial sectors and geographical territories.
Manufacturing
Engineering Manager Whiteley Fabrication & Fume Extraction Technology Oct 2000 - Aug 2002
I managed a department staffed by 7 manufacturing engineers, a tooling and development engineer and a clerical administrator for this major automotive and yellow goods sub-contract fabricator. Primary achievements included the introduction of manufacturing techniques for the Schmidt Swingo municipal road sweeping vehicle cab and the introduction of the Terex/Benford 6 & 9 tonne dumper truck chassis'. I left the company due to redundancy as the parent plc closed its Bradford based operations, transferring much of the assembly work to their main site in Northampton.
General Manager. Frank Ford (Restaurant Engineers) Feb 1996 - Oct 2000.
I initially joined the company as a Projects Engineer to oversee the implementation of the then new CE gas and electrical safety requirements for commercial catering equipment. This included new in-house test procedures and documentation, and a new stock control and materials traceability system, a new user manual and a service and installation manual. I liased with CORGI and the Leeds College of Building who used the procedures that I had established to create and deliver a new ACoP's course for registered gas fitters. After our successful CE safety accreditation I was appointed General Manager. On the back of our successful CE safety compliance I also rationalised the product design, which standardised many components and sub assemblies across the six-model range of commercial frying ranges.
Various. Charles Baynes plc Feb 1990 - Feb 1996
During my service with Charles Baynes plc I held several posts due to a rapid succession of promotions at various subsidiaries including Frank Ford (Aircraft Components) Ltd., Truflo Gas Turbines Ltd., and TKR International Ltd. I started out as Manufacturing Engineer undertaking estimates, planning work methods, tool procurement and technical purchasing, etc. I was then appointed Senior Manufacturing Engineer and I was given additional responsibility for quoting and liasing more directly with clients. During this time I worked very closely with Rolls Royce in the manufacturing development of acoustic panels for the Trent 700 and 800 series of engines. I was then promoted to Technical Sales Executive and within 6 months I was promoted to the position of Sales Manager. In this role I also accepted all the marketing responsibilities for the business and I managed customer accounts with key aerospace companies throughout the UK, Europe and North America. I also had responsibility for our exhibition stand at the Farnborough International Air Show. Shortly after relocation from Halifax to Birmingham, I was appointed Production Manager - Aerostructures. I had to train an inexperienced workforce in the specialised process of stretch forming aircraft panels. During this training period I also developed the tooling and forming techniques for the Boeing 777 strakelet (wing cuff) on behalf of our client Aerostructures Hamble Ltd. I established process based work cells, self-directed work teams headed by section team leaders and I implemented continuous improvements and the 5S's. I was made redundant due to further plc group restructuring. - Shortly after my departure Charles Baynes plc sold off all of its aerospace interests to an American based multi-national company.
Part-time lecturer. Percival Whitley College of FE Nov 1987 - Jun 1988.
For an 8 month period I taught an evening class of 4 th year sheet metal apprentices, delivering the technology syllabus of the City & Guilds level 3 in sheet metal and thin plate craft studies. I was invited to join the staff by one of my former lecturers after the departure of another staff member. It was a fantastic opportunity, which I enjoyed very much as I taught in the same classroom where I had had studied only 4 years earlier. I was offered the opportunity to join the full time teaching staff for the following year, but alas my earnings potential was far greater in industry, where I chose to remain.
Sheet Metal Worker. Various sub contractors and OEM's July 1980 - Feb 1990.
For almost 10 years, including a four-year EITB and City & Guilds apprenticeship, I had continuous employment with various sheet metal and fabrication companies covering the catering equipment, general fabrications, dust and fume extraction, textile engineering and aerospace sectors of the industry.
