Contract Engineer - British Waterways, Wales and Border Counties ( December 2004 - December 2006)

As part of the Operations Engineering team my role is to:

  • Provide professional engineering support and advice to waterway supervisors, and other waterway departments and personnel.
  • Ensure all engineering tasks are carried out in a safe and effective manner to protect members of the public, employees and the environment and heritage.
  • Undertake inspections of structures in accordance with BW's procedures and produce quality inspection reports.
  • Liaise with Third Parties carrying out work on or adjacent to the canal, to ensure compliance with British Waterways code of practice and that work is carried out in a safe and suitable manner.
  • Assist with water control structures, in terms of operation, maintenance and installation.
  • Management of the framework consultants and contractors in the delivery of waterway schemes.
  • Project Management of schemes from initial inspection to delivery and handover.

Project Engineer - British Waterways, Wales and Border Counties ( April 2000 - June 2004)

Responsibilities:

  • Management of the framework consultants and contractors in the delivery of waterway schemes.
  • Provision of technical and engineering support to the waterway business unit, the regional commercial department and the regional engineering manager.
  • Responsible for managing the assets of the Border Counties canal infrastructure, including inspection, monitoring and recording.
  • Utilisation of the asset database and engineering judgement to prioritise the major works programme with the objective of reducing BW's backlog of safety related issues.
  • Promotion of major works schemes for inclusion in the regional programme by discussion and negotiation with the engineering and business unit managers.
  • Preparation of an Appropriation Request to secure funding form the regional budget allocation
  • Project management of schemes from initial inspection to delivery and handover, the functions include:
    • Preparation of a project brief, management of internal and external multidisciplinary teams, including geotechnical, civils design and environmental specialists.
    • Procurement of schemes via various forms of contract.
    • Undertaking of delegated responsibilities under the contract
    • Carrying out CDM roles including Client Representative, Planning Supervisor and Designer.
    • Monitoring and controlling contract and whole life project costs.
    • Leadership of project team to ensure timely delivery of scheme to project brief and client requirements with a flexible approach to client and business orientated change.
    • Represent BW at meetings with waterway interest and community groups, neighbouring landowners, local authorities, councillors, MPs and third party developers to promote the interests of BW and determine and limit any risk to the business.
    • Promote good team working arrangements between BW internal functions and external bodies.

ˇ Proven track record of successfully delivering major works projects to challenging time, financial and client constraints.

Bridge Engineer - Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council ( June 98 - April 2000)

  • Management of a structures data base, maintenance inspections and development of subsequent maintenance programme.
  • Prepared and supervised term maintenance contracts as part of the maintenance programme.

These functions have included:

ˇ Supervision of the term maintenance and other contractors.

ˇ Daily supervision of the site works.

ˇ Management of safety on site.

ˇ Design of footbridges, foundations and retaining walls

September 1996 to June 1998 - Reading for my degree at The University of Manchester.

Traffic Engineer - Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council (September 1994 - September 1996)

ˇ Design and organise the construction of highway traffic schemes, including management of financial, contractual and quality issues.

ˇ Liaison with other departments, statutory undertakers, public bodies, commercial and industrial organisations, elected members and members of the public to provide the services determined by council policy.

ˇ Prepare and present monthly reports at members committee.

ˇ Carry out site supervision and site surveys as required.

ˇ Experience of transport assessments and traffic management studies and have undertaken road safety audits.

ˇ Organise and check traffic count surveys.

ˇ Arrange various inspections of highway and other structures by internal or external organisation and report observations, conclusions and recommendations.

Career Grade Engineer - Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council (Jun 1992 - September 1994)

Working in the Bridges section, I gained experience in producing contract documentation for two large highway bridge schemes and undertaking design work for footbridges, retaining walls and foundations.
