Currently working on the detailed design of the electrical generation, distribution and propulsion systems for the future aircraft carriers.
In addition to detailed design work, system responsibilities also include producing specifications and running equipment supplier competitions. Equipment covered includes generators, switchboards, transformers, filters, cabling, C&I, protection, drive converters and propulsion motors etc.
This work also requires analysis and resolution of interfacing issues with the low voltage (440V) system such as quality of power supplies, harmonics, protection co-ordination and EMC.
Computer simulation and design tools used are MATLAB/Simulink, MathCAD and EDSA.
This position also involves project management and progress reporting of tasks allocated to various line departments, drawing office and manufacturing sections.
The position also requires significant design justification, peer review and support to safety case production.
Principle Electrical Engineerat BAE Systems, Barrow-in-Furness
Electrical Design Department.
April 2000 - March 2006
Working as the lead electrical system design engineer for the Astute class nuclear submarines. The work here involved the design, specification, procurement and supporting commissioning of the electrical power, propulsion and C&I equipment.
Toward the end of this period, time was predominantly spent seconded in support of the build and commissioning of the Astute nuclear submarine. This is in contrast to the early part which involved detailed system design, equipment specification and procurement.
Specifying and attending factory acceptance tests and interfacing with the customer was required as part of this job. Responsibilities also involved resolving installation and commissioning problems, design support and ensuring customer product acceptance.
As a system designer, was also required to produce various nuclear safety and personnel safety cases - also conducting peer review of site and nuclear safety documentation.
While at BAE Systems, completed a part time MSc in electrical power systems at UMIST.
Electrical Engineerat Rolls-Royce Marine/Nuclear, Derby and Dounreay
Electrical Design Department
1994-2000
Working on the design and support of in-service and future nuclear reactor (marine and land based) electrical power systems. This included the electrical generation, control, power conversion, distribution, C&I and protection etc. Tasks involved use of the computer simulation/design tools IPSA and SABER.
Involved as part of the design authority for the upkeep of the Dounreay nuclear facility, with emphasis on the electrical, control and instrumentation equipment. As part of this role was involved in the production of nuclear safety case documentation and liaison with the Atomic Energy Authority.
Draughtsman / Junior Engineerat Rolls-Royce Marine/Nuclear, Derby and Dounreay
Design Departments and Drawing Office
1990-1994
As a draughtsman worked on the production of drawings to support various test rig and nuclear plants - typically for modifications and fitting of updated control and instrumentation,
While working as a draughtsman/junior engineer completed a part time honours degree in electrical and electronic engineering.
Technician engineer Apprenticeat Rolls-Royce Marine/Nuclear, Derby and Dounreay
September 1986 -1990
During the first four years at Rolls-Royce, completed a technician engineer apprenticeship. This involved placements at various Rolls-Royce sites, NEI international combustion and at Davis Derby mine engineering.
Over the four years, completed an ONC and HNC in electronics and power engineering part time.
