PROFILE
I have been employed by British Standards Institute for the last fourteen years and my responsibilities are now mainly in the role of being a H&S specialist but previously I managed all phases of the ISO certification process from quotation to certificate issue. Most of my clients are in the UK but I have gained valuable experience when working closely with the largest newspaper companies in Turkey and India and a school in Saudi Arabia. I have also completed assessments in Holland and Germany.
At British Rail I had various responsibilities but primarily they all included Health & Safety issues. When working for the Test and Performance Section I was involved in completing acceptance testing on various traction and rolling stock e.g. High Speed Train (HST) and Advanced Passenger Train (APT). These tests ensured that these vehicles met various H&S issues that where requested the Railway Inspectorate E.g. Brake, Ride Comfort, Bogie Stability, Track Forces, Stability, and Bogie Stresses. It was also a requirement to complete bi-annual track safety examinations that allowed access to depots and running lines.
Following the Clapham tragedy I moved to the Quality and Safety Section within BR. My prime responsibility was to complete audits of Traction and Rolling Stock depots to ensure that maintenance work achieved the relevant standards. For example following a series of rail passengers losing their lives when falling from moving trains I was involved in the investigation to determine the standard of door lock maintenance. This identified the need to modify all slam doors within BR. In addition to this I was also involved with visiting suppliers that provided BR with safety critical equipment. This included visits to suppliers of brake, fire prevention, traction, bogie & under frame and catering equipment.
With BSI my responsibilities include the completion of assessments upon organisations using the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 specifications. I have been completing 9001 audits from 1993, 14001 from 1999 and 18001 from 2003. These assessments include many Health & Safety issues especially when completing environmental audits e.g. Waste Management, Control of Hazardous Substances, and Storage of diesel oils.
The environmental standard ISO 14001 includes many requirements that are H&S related, this was verified during my Diploma training when many environmental issues were covered. Many of my assessments include visits to Railway establishments including manufacturing and maintenance processes. Procedures at these establishments include the need to meet many Railway Safety Cases, which I need to be aware off.
All organisations that I visit have to comply with Legal and Regulatory requirements, which is a requirement of ISO 9001:2000 and this is viewed at each visit that I complete.
