CV
My role within the Engineering and Technology department comprised of research into tool function and design, development of tests for existing products and development of new to the world products.
Projects and achievements:
- As part of my year placement, I spent time in China visiting product vendors and helped supervise the initial product launch for a new range of clamps. I was personally responsible for factory visits and provided feedback to the UK and America on manufacture and development progress. I provided on-site engineering advice, tested and approved samples for mass production. This trip was a fantastic learning opportunity which helped develop my communication skills and learn about different business cultures. During my time in China I established quality performance standards for manufacturing
- One of my major projects at Stanley involved the design of an impact testing machine for the lab. This machine is a pneumatically controlled unit which measures forces and speed upon impact. I was responsible for the overall design, creating a full CAD model, technical drawings and ordering and sourcing all components and materials. This involved liaising with external engineering companies and sales reps to co-ordinate all the product requirements to bring the product to manufacture.
- As a cost-saving alternative to current products, I developed a concept for a multi-angle vice for a new range of clamps. This involved the creation of a detailed CAD model and photo-rendered images.
- I created a data base which is now used by Stanley to document test procedures.
Other tasks:
- Manufacturing process planning, evaluating machine and tooling capacities, investigating delivery and shipment options.
ˇ Full product testing of numerous products to national and international standards either for product release or for development and research purposes.
- Metallurgy research and material analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS
2003-2007 The Nottingham Trent University BSc Product Design
Degree class: 1 st class (Hons)
The modular based degree enabled me to structure a personal programme of study developing a variety of disciplines, new skills and knowledge. Data gathering, problem identification and systems theory were common elements in the successful completion of modular tasks. Group-set tasks enabled the assumption of a leadership role and a methodical and disciplined approach enabled the prioritisation of workload to meet deadlines.
Modules
Design studies Management and marketing
Finance and quality management Graphical methods
Modern manufacturing Application of advanced technology
Projects
During my degree course I have worked on a variety of design projects consisting of display boards, manufacturing prototypes and technical reports. A manufacturing module included the design and manufacture of tooling to injection mould a specified component. In conjunction with Crofts and Asinder, a manufacturer based in Birmingham I completed a design project creating an illuminated kitchen handle. My major design project for my final year was to submit a thesis and exhibit my work based on the subject of a compact sash clamp.
