INTRODUCTION
I started out as a Project/Systems Engineer working for Hickson & Welch in the highly regulated chemical industry and stayed with them for 8 years. During this time I undertook many different projects working both alone and as part of a project team. These projects have been both large and small scale, ranging from £5k to £2 million. I have been involved in all stages of the project lifecycle, from the initial meeting with the customer, drafting the User Requirement Specification, costing & quoting, writing the Functional Design Specification, system design, writing PLC/DCS & SCADA software, installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance support. Recently I moved to DB Controls Ltd and started work as an Electrical & I.T. Engineer, in this role I designed MCC's and quoted for jobs in excess of £250K as well as designed and installed CCTV, fire alarms and door access systems on the CTRL project at Kings Cross. I am currently working on contract at Corus (Scunthorpe) for the AS division of CNES, where I have commissioned a furnace charging system that went out to Slovenia. I have also written URS documents and quoted for six separate jobs, two of which I am now implementing, and one of which will be implemented when the money has been approved. Presently I am acting as the Lead Electrical Engineer on a project that involves relocating a rail welding facility from Rochdale to Scunthorpe.
EDUCATION
1992-1995 Electronic & Electrical Engineering BEng (Hons), The University of Leeds.
EMPLOYMENT
2005 June Electrical/commissioning Engineer, CNES AS Division.
Having set out on the contract engineering path I was straight in at the deep end working on a project that other engineers had jumped ship on. The project in question was a furnace charging system that feeds 15 ton plates into a furnace, within 6 months of starting on the project the system was fully factory tested and shipped out to Slovenia. In the year that I have been working here I have been involved with quoting for work for the AS Division of CNES. I have quoted for six separate projects around the site and have been successful with three of the bids. Two of these bids I am presently implementing. I have designed systems incorporating both Siemens S7 300 and Allen-Bradley PLC's during this time. I am presently acting as he Lead Electrical Engineer on a project hat involves relocating a welding plant from Rochdale to Scunthorpe. As well as the relocation the systems are being upgraded and the plant automated. As part of this project I have pioneered the use of the ASi and ASi-safe systems.
2005 April-June Electrical & I.T. Engineer, DB Controls Ltd.
In the time that I was with this company I worked on several projects providing quotes for work based on an FDS provided, these projects were worth between £100K and £250K. I also designed and managed the installation of a CCTV, fire alarm, and door access system on the CTRL project at Kings Cross. Since this company is a registered Schneider Integrator I mainly used Modicon PLC systems running the Concept software, although for one of the projects Allen-Bradley PLC's were specified by the customer and so I gained a little experience with this widely regarded system, designing three such systems for the three MCC's that were required for the project. -----------
2001-2005 Control Systems Engineer, C6Solutions Ltd. (Formerly Hickson & Welch). In this position I was responsible for the writing and commissioning of any software that was needed for any new project. I also coordinated the testing of any hardwired interlock systems to ensure that they met the required industry standard of IEC61508 & IEC61511. As with the E & I engineering I was involved with the project from the initial Hazop stage. My main focus then was the writing of any software needed, the coordination of the contractors who designed and installed the hardware, and the coordination of the site technicians who tested the SIL rated interlocks. I then provided out of hours support for the plant operators for the duration of the campaign. The systems I worked on were many and varied these were Negretti, Ferranti, Yokogawa, Hima-Sella, Siemens-Texas, and Mitsubishi. It was also part of the job to ensure that the systems remained running at all times, so fault finding and maintenance work were a regular occurrence.
1999-2001 Special Projects Engineer, Hickson & Welch.
In this role I was more focused on energy conservation, Working alone I highlighted areas of cost saving then went on to justify the project by putting together a cost and comparing it against the spend. I would then go on and design and commission the project. I worked on a number of energy saving systems around the site, these mainly involved installing frequency converters on motors that were running 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Within a year I had cut the site electricity bill by almost £20000 for a cost of £33000. Another project I inherited was to replace a Fridgewatch unit on the compressors in a fridgehouse. Armed with a budget of £22000 I eventually got the new system up and running for less than £6000. Another part of this role was the maintenance of the site telephone system. This involved installing new lines, fixing faults on the system, and keeping an account of all the calls made for billing purposes.
1996 -1999 Graduate E & I Engineer, Hickson & Welch.
In this position I was responsible for new project engineering, this involved working with a team from the initial Hazop of the process all the way through the project lifecycle to the final commissioning of the plant and beyond. My role was to design, install, test and commission all the E & I hardware as well as write, test and commission any software involved with the project. This involved drawing up any loop diagrams or cable sheets and coordinating the contractors who installed them, writing and commissioning software to run the plant, and supporting the plant once up and running. I also wrote and implementing any test procedures needed for any hardwired interlocks used in the process. The very first project that I worked on in this role was to replace an existing measure pot system with a metering system. When the job was complete and the plant running, the plant manager said that they were now producing consistently the best quality 2B acid they had ever made on the plant.
SKILLS
As previously mentioned I have worked on quite a number of different control systems, these include Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Negretti, Ferranti, Yokogawa, Hima-Sella, Honeywell, Gould-Modicon, Texas, & Mitsubishi. The software I have used is as follows: Negretti MPC85, Ferranti PMS, Yokogawa IC2000, Hima-Sella ELOP & ELOP II NT, Texas TISOFT V5, Mitsubishi Medoc, Modicon Concept V2.2 & V2.5, Siemens S7, & RSLogix. I have also installed and used SCADA software Wizcon 5, & RSView. My day to day jobs have also involved maintenance of these systems so there have been times when I have had to find faults on these systems and replace parts where necessary. In my time I have become accustomed to using a range of other software that includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Projects, Visio, & Powerpoint. I have also used AutoCAD (specifically AutoCAD LT) and E-Plan.
I have a current passport to safety certificate and have attended courses on the Hima ESD system and Hima ELOP software, as well as a course on Hazop studies, and hazardous area training. I am also familiar with IEC 61508 & 61511 and the ATEX directive. I spent three days in Middlesbrough learning about SCADA systems, specifically Wizcon 5, and have spent a week at Sheffield University on an instruments and measurements course. I recently passed the IEE 16 th edition (BS7671) course.
