Materials Manager

Retained overall management role covering purchase; warehousing; material scheduling and logistics. I was also responsible for budgetary control and reporting to the client and oversaw all aspects of staff / project co-ordination and planning ensuring on-time delivery of projects.

I was responsible for developing and implementing recovery procedures covering surplus materials coupled with establishing an innovative internal and external audit trail for all materials. I had responsibility for external customer relationships including producing weekly cost summary reports to company at Board level.

First Engineering 1995 - 1997

Product Manager/Commodity Manager

Here I was responsible for the complete project life cycle including Supplier negotiation and purchase and scheduling of materials and personnel for contracts involving Construction, Overhead Lines and Permanent Way operations.

➢ Led emergency response to significant track failing which had immense penalty cost implications. Initiated response plan leading to resolution of problem resulting in penalty savings and minimal disruption to services

➢ Introduced procedures for budgetary planning leading to reduction in lead time required from initial request to ultimate provison

➢ Established systems for continual relationship building with Suppliers and customer enhancement through structured face-to-face meetings and Supplier evaluations

➢ Implemented quality audit trail control procedures leading to sign-off by both internal and external auditors

I held responsibility for the development and well-being of 22 staff including arranging on-going training, planning and related budgetary considerations. I also held full warehouse and supply logistical control ensuring a smooth operational flow in line with contract parameters

Career History1967 - 1989

Joined British Rail Workshops, January 1967, as Engineering Trainee. Engineering apprenticeship, as Mechanical Engineering Fitter, till July 1971. Mechanical Engineering Fitter July 1971 till March 1972.

Joined Civil Engineering Plant Managers, British Rail, Glasgow in March 1972 as Technical Officer. Various technical support roles, with particular emphasis on Technical Support. Procurement and Materials management.

In May 1975, still with the Civil Engineering Plant Managers was appointed Senior Technical Officer. Continued technical support activities with an emphasis on Plant and Equipment purchase. Time also spent during this period as Plant Managers Road Vehicle Transport Controller.

December 1983 appointed Development Assistant in Civil Engineering Plant Managers. Responsibilities of this post included Project Management activities of Plant and Equipment purchase, modifications to Plant and Equipment to meet customer's needs and the development of new items of Plant and Equipment and working practices.

Appointed to Industrial Engineer in Plant Managers CE in August 1989 in Re-Organisation. This post mainly covered Work Study activities and Industrial Engineering.
