Project Manager

2005-2007

Contracted by AWE Aldermaston as a Project Manager within the Infrastructure Directorate. Responsible for a rolling portfolio of projects with a total budget of up to £50m. DV security clearance held.

Project Manager

2003-2005

Contracted by BNFL as a Project Manager at Berkeley Power Station. Responsible for a number of projects within the overall Work Breakdown Structure. Production and maintenance of Near Term Work Plans within the Earned Value Analysis System as proscribed by the NDA. Project Manager responsible for identifying the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) for the management and remediation of the asbestos inventory, bringing this project through to the Invitation to Tender stage. Project Manager for the Generic Grout R&D Project to identify a grouting system for Magnox Fuel Element Debris. Writing of Cat 3 Safety Cases. Also responsible for delivering several other small projects.

Contracted by Phoenix Medical as the Project Manager for their factory relocation. A range of industrial equipment utilised in the manufacture of rubber and rubber products. Move involved lifts and transports of various equipment up to 180 tons. Plant strip-down, erection & re-commissioning, civil works, supply of all services as well as building services. Preparation of Invitations to Tender, Tender Evaluation, Contract award and review, set up and administering of CDM and health and safety systems.

Contracted by The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority as the Commissioning Manager for the new Nuclear Waste Encapsulation Plant. Responsibilities included managing the commissioning of the plant, developing the Commissioning Permit To Work System, developed and ran a training course entitled "Safe Commissioning for Operatives", Preparing Method Statements and Risk Assessments and Senior Authorised Person. Radiation Protection Supervisor.

Contracted by The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. Project Managed the design phase of the new Semi-Automated Encapsulated Waste Drum Store. Set up and ran Design Reviews, Brainstorming Meetings, HAZOPs and Value Engineering Studies. Prepared ITT and Works Scope Specification.

Additionally, Project Managed various other small projects.

Commissioning Operations Supervisor

2000

Contracted by ABB Alstom as Commissioning Operations Supervisor on the new CHP power Station at Winnington. Consisting of Two Alstom HRSGs, One GE 60MW Steam Turbine, Two GE Frame 6 Gas Turbines, 3 Alstom Auxiliary Boilers and an Aquatech Water Treatment Plant. Responsible for the safe operation of the station during commissioning. Co-ordinating commissioning activities between various vendors and sub-contractors. Training and supervision of owners operations shift teams.

Commissioning Engineer

1999-2000

Contracted by Balfour Beatty on Baldovie Waste to Energy Plant. Responsible for the Commissioning operations of 10Mw Austrian Energy Steam Turbine in association with two Kvaerner Fluidised Bed HRSGs and all Balance of Plant.

1998-99

Contracted by Fluor Daniel Ltd as the Commissioning Manager on Fawley CHP Power Station, Southampton. Project responsibilities included: Input to Front End Engineering, Contracts, HAZOPs and FATs. Interfacing with Construction to ensure timely and effective handover. Appointed Deputy Alliance (National Power) Commissioning Manager.

Commissioning Engineer

1998

Contracted by Rolls Royce Industrial Power Systems on Rolls Royce CHP. Responsible for commissioning the full Power Train and BOP. Including; Trent Gas Turbine, Nooter Erikson HRSG, Allen's Steam

Turbine and Kennicot Water Treatment Plant.

Commissioning Consultant

1997

Contracted by Mott Ewbank Preece to ensure the safe contractual commissioning of a Fiat Avio 50D5 115MW Gas Turbine Generator, running in simple cycle as well as the associated BOP. Acting on behalf of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Contracted to Shanahan Engineering, managing a team of Engineers writing Construction and Commissioning Procedures for a CCP Power Station in Una, Holland. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Operations Manager

1995-96

Contracted to General Electric as Operations & Deputy Construction Manager. Responsible for the Installation, Performance testing and Reliability trials on Five Frame Six Gas Turbines, running in simple cycle. Sited in various locations throughout the United Arab Emirates.

Project Manager

1995

Contracted to Westinghouse Power Services, out of Orlando as their Project Manager at La Pampilla Power Station, Lima, Peru. Which has two Westinghouse 501 Gas Turbines running in simple cycle. I was originally brought in as the technical representative in arbitration between Westinghouse and the Peruvian Electricity Authority. My role then developed and I was required to remain in Peru and provide training and support for the staff whilst bringing the station up to specification. During this time I liased between Westinghouse and Electro Peru, preventing any further breakdown in communication.

Managing Director

1993-95

Provided the full range of Hydro Mechanical Governor services to the Nigerian Petrochemical Industry. This included tendering for and winning a large contract to overhaul and set to work all the governors and associated systems in the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Co. Ltd (The second largest Refinery in Nigeria).

Commissioning Operations Supervisor

1993

Contracted by Babcock Energy on the new Combined Cycle Power Station at Corby. Responsible for the safe operation of the plant during commissioning. Duties also included supervision and training of the plant operators ensuring continuity of operation after handover

Employed by Woodward Governor (UK) Commissioning and Servicing their Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Governors and Control Systems in Europe Africa and The Middle East. The position required a great deal of independent problem solving on a wide and varied selection of plant and machinery in the Marine, Power and Petrochemical Industries. Working long hours in, often, hostile environments. When "in house" required to; answer customer enquiries and solve problems on the telephone, tender for contracts, produce technical reports and specification

Joined the RN as an Artificer apprentice, after an intensive four and a half year Mechanical / Electrical course there followed a further four and a half years on the job training in various Gas and Steam Turbine ships whilst undertaking and passing many written, oral and practical examinations and boards. Resulting in steady promotion to Chief Marine Engineer.

Duties and Responsibilities

OPERATION: Officer of the Watch, responsible for the safe running of all Plant and machinery.

MAINTENANCE: Maintaining a wide range of plant and machinery including; Gas and Steam Turbines, Boilers, Diesel Engines and Generators, High and Low Power Electrical Production, Conversion and Distribution. Desalination, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Plants, Compressors, Pumps and Hydraulics. Hotel Services (Building Services), Fire Fighting and Emergency Systems.

MANAGEMENT and ADMINISTRATION: Responsible for up to fifty skilled and semi-skilled personnel, both Service and civilian. Planning and co-ordinating both day-to-day and long term operation and maintenance of plant and machinery. Production of maintenance schedules, defect and performance reports. Writing personal appraisals. Responsible for motivating, training and general welfare of personnel.
