Skills & Projects

In my in employment with Tay Homes Ltd, I gained experience in the construction industry with regard to design and site management as well as dealing with Local Authorities. I also was given the assignment of CAD manager, which entailed setting up and administrating CAD stations (software/Hardware) as well as my architectural roles.

From Sep 1999 - 2001 I was self-employed, giving an Architectural service to the Public. This enabled me to gain a better working knowledge of many kinds of design, from small conservatories and extensions to large scale refurbishment and industrial design, as well as single plot housing and also making applications for local authority approval. A major part of the architectural service was the mediation between client and contractor, to ensure that the client’s wishes were firstly built into the design and approved by the relevant authorities and also conveyed accurately to the main contractor.

From 2001 – April 2002 I had the role of senior or chief architect within a medium sized, volume, house builder. I reported directly to the Development director, Construction director and the Managing director depending on which area of the industry was relevant. The skills gained here are that of a more managerial role and implementation of previous experience into the workings of the firm to enable a smooth flow of operations from inception through to construction and completion.

From April 2002 until Aug 2005 I worked as a freelance consultant for various architectural firms within the city of London and in partnership with consultants UK wide. This has included work on diverse projects. The role at each firm has also covered a wide range of architectural disciplines to cover from initial inception, detailed design, through to site & project management, in tandem with liasing with other consultants & sub-contractors and meeting with local authorities such as Planning & Building control officers to make the job run smoothly through to completion.

Since the beginning of 2005 I have been working on a number of high end refurbishment projects in the city centre of London. These jobs involved the architectural services already being provided but also need a higher level of site supervision & management. This would start with the estimating process for costings & timescale being my responsibility to produce & to implement along with the architectural services. Continuous co-ordination of design with costing ramifications due to changes or additional time being required is essential to ensure that these large projects run smoothly but also keep in profit for the main contractor & cost effective for the client. It is my responsibility to ensure that the current status of any project can be ascertained and also to implement any necessary measures to increase productivity. Due to the nature of my involvement now being much more than architectural services I have formed a new company that reflects this. I have also been involved in residential projects in Grenada & Ghana as well as helping with detailing & supplying of materials for a hotel project in Kumasi – Ghana, this has opened up a new level of designing to include for international laws & environment in construction methods & design. I have also now learned some basic TWI.
