Software Developer/Architect
BristolAs well as continuing in my developer role (see below), I was also made project architect for several key sub-systems of Helm 4, including Game Server, Virtual Server, and SaaS support. As well as being responsible for design and implementation, this role also involves managing a small team of developers.
One of two lead developers of the Helm 4 multi-server Control Panel - an industry-leading provisioning system for Web Hosts which automates everything from billing, to the configuration & control of third-party products on remote servers. The core system, in which I was heavily involved, has a fully modular architecture, and is extensible to such a degree that theoretically, it can control anything, not just systems in a Hosting environment, and support the latest industry developments, all with minimal effort. Such is the significance of the product to the industry, it has attracted interest from companies such as Microsoft and Intel.
* Development of a fully ‘skinnable’ and multilingual ASP.NET interface engine and custom controls using proprietary templating techniques. Not to be confused with simple ‘theming’, the engine enables Web Apps to take on completely different look and feels through fully customisable skins, as well as providing an easy way for clients to style the App to suit their exact requirements. Development of this system also involved the writing of client-side javascript to enhance even further the functionality of the custom controls and interface, including some AJAX.
* Development of an operating system independent, load-balancing, client-server architecture which has the ability to instruct software modules installed locally or on remote servers to perform any conceivable task.
* Multi-threaded, asynchronous Client-Server Socket communication using a proprietary protocol.
* Development of a comprehensive Billing System, dealing with everything from sales/invoicing, to integration with external payment gateways such as PayPal, Protx and WorldPay (again, modular & extensible), including implementation of the new 3D-Secure architecture for credit card payments.
* Development of modules to control 3rd-party products such as IIS, MS DNS, MS SQL Server, including migration of legacy classic ASP code.
