CV

I began working independently nearly three years ago following 25 years of working for large organisations, mainly local government. During the last five years of working in a local authority my work focused on the following three distinct areas:
• As Area Director for a large regeneration area, I managed a range of regeneration/neighbourhood projects, including the development of the neighbourhood management agenda. This included all aspects of community involvement, development, consultation and development of area and neighbourhood plans; developing and managing local partnerships and services, bringing together large groups of people who lived, worked and delivered services within a neighbourhood; attracting external funding for new projects and services
• Leading on broad-ranging local government corporate policy and on the development of strategic, corporate planning documents; the development of performance programmes; leading on the preparation for government inspections
• As Corporate Advisor to a local government Chief Executive, leading on governance inspections and government recovery programmes, monitoring action plans and developing complex Combined Plans
Working independently, I have undertaken the following work:
• Worked for a consortium of voluntary sector Chief Executives assisting them with team building issues and the development of a business plan
• A three month contract for re’new Leeds (regeneration company) developing Construction Leeds, a new partnership organisation which co-ordinates all construction activity across the city and assists local unemployed people to train and obtain construction jobs in Leeds. Following the funding approval, I developed the next stage of the organisation, including recruitment of the new team, wrote a plan for £1.5m skills training funding and a 3 year Business Plan and was then an arms-length mentor to the new Construction Leeds Manager for three months
• Working for Middleton Partnership, South Leeds (on behalf of Leeds City Council, Leeds South Homes and re’new) developing the building blocks for the regeneration agenda with local people to determine a regeneration plan for the next 10 years. This work included research, consultation, review of services and previous work and producing a report with recommendations and a delivery mechanism
• Undertook a comprehensive review of the Belle Isle Family Centre, South Leeds, which included mentoring the acting manager; consultation exercises with users of the service and local communities; writing a three year Business Plan; developing a performance management framework; reviewing and updating policies and processes; writing a set of guidance documents for the Board of Trustees; briefing and training the team and trustees; assisting with HR/disciplinary issues
I have not undertaken any contract work over the last year as I have been writing a book.
My previous experience includes child protection social work, managing a range of social services across all sector areas, managing teams of people, institutions, working within communities, heading up/leading on a range of strategic support functions (including policy, strategy, information, HR, complaints, training, quality assurance, planning) and developing new multi-agency services. To do this I managed substantial budgets, large numbers of people and led on multi agency strategic issues.
I regularly chaired large multi-agency meetings/seminars, focusing on policy, planning, development, working together across agencies reviewing services and problem solving, with a reputation for an inclusive, but firm style. I have also been a visiting lecturer for Hull University for their community and youth programme.
My social services experience is as follows:
• Social work and senior social work with children and families teams. Separate work with adults with learning disability
• NSPCC for two years to focus on: child protection investigations, family therapy, play therapy, counselling, assessment of risk of Schedule 1 offenders, change work, etc.
• Social work management of child care and adults teams, fostering panel, family centre, DCO’s, adult day centre and early years team
• Policy work specialising in children with disabilities and leaving care
• Area services manager responsible for 15 children’s homes within large SSD
• Head of policy and strategy including the following teams: policy and planning, training, information, quality assurance, complaints, refugees and on a short-term basis to cover for staff vacancies – three HR teams
• Corporate brief with other LA departments including partnership work with voluntary, community and private sectors
It is several years since I have worked within a social services setting; following my SSD work I moved to a Chief Executives team as Area Director for Regeneration, mainly social regeneration. I have not therefore registered my social work qualification. Although I do not have recent experience of social work, I am able to professionally update myself very quickly.
