Key roles were:
Lead engineer (3 years). Testing, commissioning and operation of a £200m radioactive decontamination plant, including writing safety/risk assessments, liaison with government regulators and reviewing/checking and approving documentation.
Engineer (2 years). Drawing up specifications for the inspection / revalidation of plant equipment, the non-destructive examination / repair of pressure vessels and the testing of ventilation systems.

Lead author of a partnering arrangements document, the deciding factor in the award of a £multi-million ship refit contract

Team leader for a commercial pricing exercise, which saved £450k from a competitive tender

Trainer, throughout my employment with DRDL I was writing and delivering presentations on my areas of expertise including “human factors vs. safety” (to approx 70 staff) and “decommissioning / decontamination processes” (to new staff)

Key roles were:
Engineer, responsible for managing the laboratory facilities, the development and testing of new filter designs (e.g. for Concorde and Nimrod aircraft) and solving process control / customer problems.

Safety Manager, responsible for coordinating the efforts of the management team and implementing a new health and safety management system.

Quality Manager, a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved signatory during a period of organisational transition – this involved implementing the European civil aviation quality system (JAR21) and integrating it with the existing quality management systems. Throughout this period I was building relationships with suppliers, customers and regulators to continually improve productivity and quality.

As a researcher I balanced my time between lecturing undergraduate mathematics, work involving experimental and computational fluid dynamics, writing reports / papers and presenting work at seminars / conferences.
