Employment History
(Jan 2008 & ongoing)
Senior Oracle Developer & Technical Consultant
Portsmouth, UKAffinion International, Portsmouth, UK.
Working on a migration project, my role included new scripting in PL/SQL and SQL, and tuning of data at around the 100 million record mark. I used techniques such as bulk collects, table & index compression, some data warehousing skills such as materialized view query re-writes, and direct-path INSERT SELECT statements to achieve sensible time scales of just minutes, instead of hours!

To provide support through analysis / design / programming in the maintenance of existing major applications which have been developed under Oracle 10g in Forms & Reports with SQL and PL/SQL, Oracle E‑Business Suite and other minor PC applications.
Maintenance includes correcting errors that are detected in the application by users, making changes in SQL and PL/SQL to the application to meet user requests, maintaining all documentation relating to application design, program specifications and descriptions, data design, user guides and training modules.
Development includes assisting in the formulation of user requirements and system specifications, analysis of manual systems, systems design and programming, design of user environment, maintenance of application design repository and all documentation relating to application design, program specifications and descriptions, data design, user guides and training modules.
My role includes involvement in the Oracle E-Business Suite invoicing interface (AP) with the heavy use of SQL and PL/SQL, and some involvement in the PO interface; tying existing systems into the new Oracle E-Business Suite interface.
(Aug 2002 to Oct 2003)
All-In-One Analyst, Designer, Programmer & Tester
Veetee Rice, Rochester, UKAs importers and exporters of rice to the UK, my role was to write their Export system for them in Oracle 9i using Forms and Reports 6i. Knowledge of DBA skills, SQL & PL/SQL skills along with migration and substantial testing of existing systems in both Oracle 8i and 9i was also necessary. I also made modifications to their Import system in order to comply with recent customs changes, and integrated the system into their existing menu structure.
(Jul 2001 to May 2002)
Senior Analyst / Developer
JP Morgan Chase, LuxembourgPart of a very large development team working in Oracle 8i, Forms and Reports 6i on a Transfer Agency Portfolio project. Work done included a high proportion of migration of Forms and Reports from version 5 to 6i (roughly 100 Forms and 70 Reports) using SQL and PL/SQL, which meant replacement of some previously-written manual code with new Forms-embedded code (such as tab pages) was also possible. I undertook subsequent unit & system testing of that migration according to pre-written regression test plans, and included ad-hoc testing of my own. Automated tests were carried out with reference to original specifications, though since some time had passed since their initial write-up (and minor functionality changes had also occurred), it was also necessary to liaise with the end-users in order to maintain accurate testing of that code.
(May 2000 to Feb 2001)
Analyst / Programmer
Geneva Technology Ltd., Cambridge, UKAnalysis, design & coding of a sub-system for telephone billing, that is used to override the pricing policy so specific customers can be given discounted rates. Although I was initially working from detailed specifications these were found to be inaccurate and the analysis had to be done again and new specifications had to be written and then regression tested. I wrote stored procedures and database triggers in PL/SQL and SQL in Oracle 8i. I also worked closely with the Delphi developers to link the front end with the new code.
(Mar 1997 to Feb 2000)
Senior Analyst/Programmer/Developer/Tester
European Commission, Brussels, BelgiumProviding general computing consultancy services as part of a team to DG EMPL of the European Commission. I developed medium-sized application systems in ORACLE from analysis through to implementation, this included writing packages, procedures and triggers in SQL and PL/SQL. I developed front-end screens in Designer 2000 and Forms 6. I also migrated data from existing applications interfacing with current archival systems, and providing user support. Current systems include a publications stock control system, and a studies database for storing and consulting commissioned reports by third parties, (via the Intranet using ORACLE Web Developer Suite) that later go on to become finalised publications whose details are stored in the aforementioned library stock control system.
All systems were developed with the aid of Designer/Developer 2000, and run under ORACLE V7.3 with NT client.

My work involved having a detailed knowledge of writing and performing automated testing of the ORACLE-based product for 8 months.
Using an in-company designed test jig, accurate simulation of day-to-day activity, along with real-time monitoring of traffic over the SWIFT-banking network, was achieved to produce a high quality error-free system.
