CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
| 1. Document Roadmap to Address Identified Challenges 1.1 British Telecommunications •Led a team that identified security of systems access control issues. Having recognised the need and gained customer acceptance for a strategic review, undertook a $1million consulting engagement. Successful completion and adoption of recommendations by BT was critical to retaining a $9million software and services agreement, which represented 11% of Novell UK’s annual turnover. •As part of a team, analysed requirements then defined and designed a solution roadmap for 140k employees and multiple systems (>200 applications with 20 systems where management of identity was critical). This saved BT £24 million in year one with projected savings of >£100million through improved systems access for partners and suppliers. 1.2 United Biscuits •Part of a small team selected to contribute to the company’s IT strategic direction with a view to upgrading technology that had suffered from years of under investment. Following our recommendations, a “test project” was undertaken demonstrating server consolidation, using clustering technology to increase server availability and reduce unplanned downtime. •Following this, United Biscuits requested I run a series of workshops exploring various Novell technologies to support future business growth and acquisition. For two years, I was instrumental to defining and managing various projects to integrate staff identities from several systems, to consolidate and upgrade >200 disparately located servers into three data centres, and to gain full control of the desktop and laptop estate – the total value of these projects was approximately $150,000. •Throughout my tenure, United Biscuits continued to renew and expand their Novell license agreement worth approximately $500,000 (up 20%) and significantly reduced their administration and support costs by approximately $90,000 per annum for identity management, desktop and laptop calls and server maintenance. 2. Technical Project Management/Technical Design Authority 2.1 VirginMedia •Took control of a project to introduce a self-service password reset service for employees, which had already cost $200,000. The project had stalled due to a number of factors, including the mergers of NTL, Telewest and Virgin Mobile and a lack of drive from the internal project manager. Through further work worth approximately $150,000, the project was expanded, completed and implemented. •Instrumental to ensuring VirginMedia focused effort and resource on completing system testing and the integration of 8 other systems supporting a further 12,000 users (managed by a third party) inherited from the mergers. Despite the complexity, my people and project management skills and technical knowledge ensured all systems were integrated and tested within six months. 2.2 British Telecommunications •The file and print infrastructure for staff had become outdated and in need of upgrade in order to remain within the vendor support lifecycle. As Lead Architect and Project Manager of this one year project conducted by a team of three Novell and eight BT staff, before extensive testing took place, I secured high levels of confidence in the rollout plan by ensuring all designs were ratified and agreed by all parties. •Reduced operational support costs (approximately $400,000 annually) through improved authentication security and file and print infrastructure consolidation. I was also instrumental to a highly successful introduction of a printing regime using Xerox Document Centre, receiving accolades from and providing enormous benefit to the mobile workforce. 3. Strategic System Upgrades 3.1 Leeds City Council •Led a highly successful technical design and delivery (on time, to budget) of a technology refresh and network improvement programme for approximately 40,000 users (reducing 150 servers to 50) for a multiple technologies project facilitating home working and remote access for staff, citizens and partners, whilst improving management and simplifying support. This allowed Leeds to deliver against the Electronic Government Agenda, increase the number of home workers and improve the rollout of new applications and public services. This project was worth $2 million. •The definition and successful delivery of this project was inextricably linked to a six year license deal worth $12.5 million over six years plus a support agreement worth $500,000. My customer relationship and account management skills have been instrumental to ensuring that the relationship continued to be one of true partnership. Since leaving Novell, I have continued to be consulted on this account. 3.2 RSPCA •With an infrastructure limiting staff login to a single location the RSPCA was looking to improve capabilities for their mobile workforce of over 2,000. With a headquarters and >20 other main locations, it was necessary to ensure all IT systems could be managed from a central site. •Working with their IT staff, carried out a number of demonstrations of capability. By ensuring the involvement of the right technical staff, defined a solution that allowed users to login at any site and have access to information, as required. Through introducing a combination of proprietary and open source software, reduced software costs by $175,000 per annum. •The solution also allowed the introduction of handheld devices for use by inspectors, enabling access to information sometimes literally “in the field”. Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution 3.3 Nissan •Recognised as a successful troubleshooter with a structured, logical approach, I was asked to resolve a business critical issue. User authentication was failing, with serious risk of production shut down and significant revenue losses. For a problem that had remained unresolved for two days and despite some of the technology not being familiar to me, I drove resolution through fine focus, facilitating identification and an interim fix within three and a final resolution within 12 hours. •The success of this project resulted in Nissan requesting my help in reviewing their existing Identity Management Infrastructure and proposing a future vision. 4. Tactical System Upgrades 4.1 Saudi Aramco •Instrumental to a successful technology refresh (delivered within tight timescales and budget) for 25,000 workstations (reducing >600 servers to 247). Recognised for my reputation, technology and customer knowledge and experience of the Middle East, I was responsible for project design as well as planning the migration roadmap – >99% of migrations occurred with minimal impact and downtime. •One of two team leaders responsible for delivering the designs and processes for the migrations, as well as 40% of migrations, including all migrations of >500 users at a time and those in remote locations such as pipeline pumping stations. I also stood in as project manager from time to time. |
