EMPLOYMENT

Jan 2003 - Present Date Spear Europe Environmental & Facilities Co-ordinator

Whilst working within Spear Europe, I implemented an environmental management system called the Green Dragon Environmental Standard - a recently accredited Welsh EMS, which is closely linked to ISO 14001 and EMAS. In order to implement the EMS effectively, I have been responsible for writing numerous policies including the environmental policy, waste management policy and energy policy all of which are implemented and updated in accordance with the management system. Whilst setting up the management system I found an alternative route for our major waste source saving Spear tens of thousands of pounds, in addition to other waste management projects. Spear Europe won an award for one of these recycling projects from the local council and also came highly commended in a national competition.

In addition to implementation of the EMS for Spear Europe, I was responsible for all the co-ordination of all environmental issues. This co-ordinating role included advising management on legislative changes, proactive measures to improve environmental performance, heading the Environmental Team meetings, measures to enhance Spear's environmental image, liaising with environmental service providers, the negotiation of environmental contracts and the arrangement/provision of environmental training programmes for all relevant staff. Due to having to work very hard with people from the factory floor right up to the Managing Director in order to get the environmental policies and good practices enforced, my teamwork skills have been further developed.

In addition to the environmental aspect of my position, I am also responsible for providing full administrative support for health & safety issues. This support includes advising on legislative issues, undertaking CoSHH assessments, investigation of accidents and liaising with regulatory authorities as required.

A further aspect of my current position is facilities co-ordination. This co-ordination role involves the management of all facilities management contracts within Spear Europe.

Sept 2000 - Jan 2003 National Focus Trainee Scientific Officer

Responsible for several research projects intended for publication, such as guidelines for incident response and follow-up, the development of a public health model of acute chemical incidents, establishing what chemical waste disposal organisations are utilised by the environmental health departments throughout the UK in the event of an incident, and the formulation of a list of the most common chemicals involved in an incident. Also responsible for handling enquiries to a 24-hour chemical incident hotline in the event of a chemical incident which is 'unusual', particularly complex, likely to have a major impact on public health, likely to attract national media attention and/or span regional and national boundaries. I was also involved in the UK response to the September 11th attacks and future planning for such an event. In addition, I have delivered professional presentations on behalf of the Unit to the Emergency Planning and business communities.

July 2000 - Sept 2000 Caerphilly County Borough Council Waste and Energy Review Project

Received a temporary placement undertaking a waste and energy minimisation initiative for Caerphilly County Borough Council involving a total of eleven companies. An initial audit had been completed by an external consultant, which needed implementation and expansion if possible. The review, which is collaboratively funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the local authority, the Environment Agency and the participating companies, seeks to improve the environmental performance of the eleven participating companies in the fields of waste and energy management and water conservation, and to review compliance with waste legislation. The project also aims to improve the profitability and competitiveness of the participating companies as a result of cost effective waste minimisation, energy management, water conservation and improved environmental credentials associated with sound environmental performance. Byachieving improved environmental performance within this project, and

by committing to a programme of continual improvement, participation within this project enabled the companies to use to the project in order to go some way to working towards obtaining an environmental management system such as ISO14001 in conjunction with other initiatives.

Identified projected savings, in conjunction with the consultants report, of approximately £300,000 in one company in the first year of implementation of the measures highlighted, and the majority of these savings expected to be yearly savings. Approximately £150,000 of this was identified after the consultants audit was completed. Upon completion of the three month project the actual savings attained had already reached £70,000 per year with the more complex measures still awaiting implementation. Other companies taking part in the project had potential yearly savings in the region of £1,500-£20,000 identified and close to realisation in full.

July 1999 - Sept 1999 Personnel Hygiene Services Limited Noise Survey & CoSHH Assessment

Received a placement involving undertaking a noise survey and CoSHH assessment for four industrial mat laundering sites. These sites were based in Cardiff, Bolton, Brentford and Coventry. In order to undertake these tasks, it was imperative to interpret and put into practice the theory learnt in University. Using this information, correct procedures and good working practices could be used to determine the most appropriate method for collecting and analysing data. The result of the placement was the production of eight reports (one for each site and each survey). The recommendations of the reports have been implemented fully in each laundry and will be used as working documents and permanent records for information and legal purposes.

June 1998 - Aug 1998 Adecco Alfred Marks Recruitment Agency Clerical Work

Received two placements over this period, one of which was a long-term placement. Main duties were that of general clerical duties and receptionist.

Dec 1996 - Sept 1997 Welsh Local Government Association Administrative Assistant

Continuing experience in a busy office environment. Main duties included welcoming visitors into the building, supervising the switchboard, arranging meetings and other usual administrative duties.

June 1994 - Dec 1996 Lloyds Bank Plc Clerical Officer

Variety of experience in busy office environment working in teams and using own initiative as appropriate, including providing direct counter service, dealing with telephone enquiries and performing a range of clerical duties such as data calculations and collection, and tabulation of information using information technology.
