2001 to 2003 (site manufacturing and semiconductor activities ceased)

Quality and Manufacturing Services Manager

Led function responsible for all aspects of quality systems / assurance and reliability engineering, together with purchasing & procurement (to $5M per month spend), logistics and manufacturing systems.

Successfully slimmed down organisation and changed culture of these teams from functional to process perspective to ensure recognisable contribution to business.

Re-invigorated supplier selection processes to make relevant to changed business.

Championed deployment of closed loop defect elimination processes from design to manufacture

Led site's successful transition to ISO9001:2000

European lead (Ipswich plus 2 Italian sites) for move from legacy systems to Agilent's new global Oracle enterprise resource planning system. This involved detail design, build, test, training and transition together with analysis of process change on the roles of individuals.

The switchover occurred smoothly and on time with no significant adverse impact on business continuity or customers and facilitated significant reduction in requirement for IT and other support.

2000 to 2001

Manufacturing Manager - Devices Wafer Fabrication and Test

Responsible for manufacture of devices, including 'sustaining' process and product engineering

Ramped production 6X over 9 months, consistently achieving on-time delivery to meet correspondingly aggressive ramp of internal customer's needs.

Introduced new working practices moving high volume products from 'jobbing shop' methodology to disciplined predictable flow, this resulted in improvements to yield, quality, and cycle-time as well as labour efficiency

Formed strong formal and informal linkages with customer site in Singapore, and marketing in Ipswich, to ensure that demand was met with minimum inventory risk

1998 to 2000

Devices Engineering Manager

  • Dramatically reduced laser batch qualification costs and lead times by changing qualification build and justifying move to sample stress testing of high volume wafers.
  • Ensured process engineering, equipment engineering device engineering teams delivered against challenging yield, cost and NPI objectives in cooperation with R&D teams.
  • Led new implementation of Workstream MES (Manufacturing Execution System). Implemented consistent maintainable models, easier for operators to use and gave better data reporting capability.
  • Designed and implemented on-line SPC system, working with process engineering to identify critical parameters benefiting from SPC, and defining standard for responding to 'Out of Control' indicators - leading to significant improvement in process reliability and consistency of product.
  • Introduced cost accounting software linked to MES system giving Devices manufacturing a method for financially exploring loss and variance and driving prioritisation of improvement projects.

1994 - 1998

Production Manager (discrete products).

Responsible for manufacturing and sustaining engineering of discrete opto-electronic products (Revenue typically $1.5M pcm plus optical sub-assemblies for modules)

  • Reduced manufacturing cycle-time by factor of 3 and improved productivity by 50%
