1978 to 1980 Austin Morris Management Grading Job Grading Manager

This was intended to be a temporary position for two years, and similar positions were established in the other companies within Leyland Cars. It was intended as a career development position for the incumbent, and to establish a new Management Job Grading and Salary Structure which was common to all the companies within Leyland cars as follows :-

  • Austin Morris Ltd (Volume Car Division & Light Commercial)
  • Jaguar, Rover Triumph Ltd (Specialist Car Division)

The incumbents were picked for having wide experience across the British Leyland Corporation, with a good understanding of the way that the individual parts of the corporation operated and fitted together, and for having good inter-personal and negotiating skills at all levels.

Responsible for analysing the job content, responsibilities, professional requirements, and the impact of the job on the company's business; to ensure that all management jobs were given grades which were equitable, not only within the company, but by comparison with management jobs in the other companies across the corporation. Grades and organisational structures had to be negotiated with the Organisation and Management Planning organisations in the separate companies, and finally agreed with British Leyland corporate staff.

It had been intended that at the end of the project I would move into Product Engineering as Principal Engineer, Advanced Engines; but as a result of a financial crisis at the end of 1979, the corporation underwent a major restructuring, the car companies being reduced from three to one with major redundancies, particularly at company staff levels.

  • Common Lane Light Commercial Vehicle Plant, Birmingham
  • Coventry Engines Plant, Coventry
  • Bargoed, South Wales

Served as Secretary to the Productivity Committees, which were chaired by the Plant Director and which met at least monthly. Close liaison with Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering to reflect engineering changes, and with Finance for costs and savings.

1967 to 1969 Plant Productivity Engineer

Responsible for investigating and, where applicable, implementing productivity proposals across all parts of the Longbridge Plant. Liaised closely with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, suppliers and Finance, as necessary. The success of this operation led to the expansion into Group and then Corporate activities.

1963 to 1967 Production Engineer

Responsible for the planning, tooling and day-to-day efficiency of the Longbridge No. 1 Car Assembly Building, for the assembly, test and final finishing of 7,500 vehicles per week, including all versions of Mini, high specification 1100/1300, Wolseley/Riley 1.5, A35 van, Austin A40 Mk II, A60 van, Austin Morris Wolseley 1800.
