CV
| The Iain Rennie Hospice at Home – Charity Event Organiser (Sept 2007 – present) I was responsible for the organisation of sponsored events run by the charity, and for assisting members of the public in organising their own. Further to this, I selected and managed the 26 strong London Marathon 2008 Team, also arranging a photo shoot and meal prior to the event. Throughout my work, excellent communication skills were essential in order to portray my ideas to others effectively, and to expand the number of useful contacts for the charity. MSc Research Project on Mycobacterium Tuberculosis - May - September 2007 4 month research project under supervision of Prof Besra at the University of Birmingham. My project was the construction of cell lines containing M. tuberculosis study genes, followed by subsequent biochemical analysis with an aim to characterise genes both in vivo and in vitro. I became proficient in both the use and manipulation of a large number of molecular and biochemical techniques, and passionate about obtaining suitable evidence to infer gene function. My work has lead to a paper in Microbiology. I was also offered a PhD position. EIC Insurance – Office Assistant (Jul – Sept in each of 2004/05/06 and 07) When entering into a small team of seven people it was essential for me to integrate well and settle into my role quickly. Initially I was required to transfer data to a new database, something which required me to adapt to, and understand their databases as soon as possible. Since then, I carried out other tasks, such as insurance broking and the organisation of an annual charity event. My employer asked me to return to work for them during each of my academic holidays. Dixons Head Office – Nationwide Plasma TV Orders Manager (Jun 2003 – Sept 2003) I was responsible for the ordering of every plasma TV sold by Dixons/Currys nationwide, thus it was vital for me to work competently under pressure and reach my daily deadlines. The role involved extensive Microsoft Office use and the ability to deal with store managers and customers in a professional manner, irrespective of their mood. I represented my department in company meetings, and was responsible for the structuring and testing of a very successful automated system. Work Experience and Independent Travel in Central America (Jan 2003 – May 2003) My trip began with an intensive 2 week Spanish course to enable to me communicate with the people I would be working with in the following months. I undertook a number of projects; including a teaching assistant, turtle patrol warden, tour guide and sloth carer. This work was followed by a month of independent travel in Central America. Goodrich – I.T. Administrator (Aug 2002 – Jan 2003) I joined a small team of 5 who were responsible for the maintenance of the network of the company’s new site, which also involved the set-up of new machines for a number of individuals. Good communication and problem solving skills were essential, along with the ability to adapt to each situation quickly and efficiently. |
